Raised by Aunt and Uncle
The original poster, Lucas, explained that he was raised by his aunt and uncle.
His Sister Was Seriously Ill as a child
His older sister had developed a pretty serious illness when Lucas was six years old.
Parents Couldn’t Cope
Their parents found that they could not take care of both of them.
Lucas Sent to Live With Family
They left Lucas at his grandparents’ house, and their uncle took him in after that.
Their parents never explained what was happening, they just told him they were going to visit their grandma for a while and never came back.
Unhappy Family
Both their uncle and his grandparents were unhappy with what Lucas’ parents had done.
Lucas said that after that, he only saw his parents about five times and then not at all for the last nine years.
No More Contact
When Lucas was twelve, he realized that he was the only one putting effort into reaching out, so he decided to stop contacting his parents.
A Blessing in Disguise
Lucas said everything turned out okay, though, because his uncle and aunt were never able to have children, so they called Lucas their miracle child.
They formally adopted him when he turned 18.
The Past Always Comes Back to Haunt You
After Lucas’ sister passed away between Thanksgiving and Christmas, his parents tried to speak with him at the funeral.
Avoiding His Parents
Lucas stayed in the back of the crowd and made sure he could leave before his parents could get the chance to talk to him.
Calling on the Phone
They then tried to call Lucas’ uncle to talk to him, but he said he wasn’t available.
Midnight Mass
His parents were finally able to try again at Christmas midnight mass when Lucas went with his grandmother.
Feeling Crowded
Lucas’ parents sat behind him, and he said he could feel them staring.
After mass, his parents attempted to approach him and hug him.
Pretended Not to Know Them
Lucas backed away and pretended not to know them and said, “Sorry, do I know you?”
Rejection
They said, “We’re your parents!” and Lucas replied, “My parents are at home.”
On the way out of mass, his parents approached again and said, “You really don’t recognize us?”
Lucas said, “Oh, are you my dad’s brother? I think I remember you from when I was little.”
Getting What They Deserve
Lucas’ grandmother thinks his parents deserve what he did for trying to come back into his life as if nothing had happened.
Trying to Do the Right Thing
Lucas’ parents wrote him a long letter about how hurt they were and how he should have understood that they tried to do the right thing.
They Would Always Be His Parents
They also said that they would always be Lucas’ parents and that nothing would change that.
Too Harsh?
Some of Lucas’ other relatives think he was too harsh, but he doesn’t think his parents should get a pass because they suddenly remembered him now that his sister had passed away.
