In a controversial move, President Joe Biden has announced a $325 million security assistance package for Ukraine, reaffirming the United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Here’s the whole story.
The announcement came after a meeting between President Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Washington, D.C., his second since the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Assistance Package
The security assistance package includes a range of critical military equipment, such as anti-tank weapons, air defense equipment, artillery rounds, and other resources.
Committed to Helping Ukraine
During the announcement, President Biden said, “We’re committed to helping Ukraine build a force capable of ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security, capable of deterring future threats against sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom, which are underway now.”
Future of Freedom
“Because that’s what this is all about – the future, the future of freedom. America can never, will never walk away from that,” he added.
Strengthen Ukraine’s Position
Before meeting with President Biden, President Zelenskyy expressed his mission to strengthen Ukraine’s position in defense of its citizens and democracy.
He said, “It’s good that our countries are really, truly allies.”
Zelenskyy Met With Pentagon Officials
In addition to meeting with President Biden, President Zelenskyy held discussions with lawmakers and officials at the Pentagon.
During their meeting, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III reaffirmed the United States’ “unwavering support” for Ukraine.
Secretary Austin provided an update on U.S. security assistance efforts, focusing on Ukraine’s urgent needs on the battlefield.
The $325 million security assistance package represents the 47th instance of the U.S. Department of Defense providing equipment to Ukraine since August 2021.
Biden Administration Has Spent Over $100 Billion
Last week, the White House confirmed that the Biden administration has spent over $100 billion on the war in Ukraine.
This information came to light following a request by Sen. JD Vance and more than 30 Senate Republicans for a comprehensive report on security assistance provided to Ukraine.
Twitter Users Expressed Their Views
Several social media users shared their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “America is keeping this war alive instead of stopping it.”
Another user added, “The ease at which they announce such packages and make excuses for American people in dire need is outrageous.”
Secure the Southern Border
A third user added, “We’ve spent 10x in Ukraine what it would have cost to build the wall and secure our southern border. Amazing how the money just materializes for things The Democrats want done.”
Imagine the Number of Homeless and Poor People That Amount Can Help
A fourth user wrote, “Imagine the number of homeless and poor people that amount can help. But they would rather spend it on a war that kills people.”
