Religious Mom Called Her “Blasphemous” for Playing Music During Kid’s Play Date – But It Was Fine for HER to Show a Jesus Movie?

In a Reddit post that went viral, a mother, Faema, shared her escalating conflict with another parent who tried to instill her religious beliefs in Faema’s child. As the situation evolved from an argument over music to a concern of religious indoctrination, the community responded with various perspectives, sparking an engaging debate on the boundaries of religion and personal beliefs in the upbringing of children.

The Original Poster (OP), Faema, was in her bedroom listening to Streetlight Manifesto playing on the stereo while her oldest child was playing with a friend.

Her boyfriend was keeping an eye on the kids.

Her child’s friend’s mother, Emily, arrived to pick up her kid and then wanted to talk with Faema.

Emily was furious! She said Faema’s choice of music was “blasphemy” and that she didn’t want her child to listen to it.

In response, Faema reminded Emily that her family does not share the same religious beliefs as her, prompting a heated exchange.

Emily then got outraged and told Faema that she needed to see the light.

But Faema clapped back! “Leave my house immediately or I will have my boyfriend ‘assist’ you in finding your way to the exit.”

An Email About Not Respecting Differences

The following day, Faema took the initiative to reach out to Emily via email.

In a composed and respectful manner, Faema expressed her concerns about Emily’s insistence on preaching to her children and insulting her beliefs in front of her child.

Faema emphasized the importance of respecting differing viewpoints and kindly asked Emily to refrain from imposing her religious beliefs on her family.

She went on to say that she would not play music while Emily’s child was visiting.

An Apology and Plans to Move Forward

Emily responded with an apology, citing personal struggles as a factor influencing her behavior.

She acknowledged the difference in beliefs and expresses her willingness to respect Faema’s standpoint moving forward.

Another Play Date

But things took a turn when Faema’s daughter went to Emily’s daughter’s house for a play date.

When Faema went to pick up her kid, she asked what they did and if they had fun.

Attempted Christian Indoctrination of Her Child

Her daughter replied, “We watched a movie about Jesus!”

Faema was taken aback by what she heard, but fortunately, her child already understood that Christians have their beliefs and that her mom and dad didn’t share those beliefs.

She’s an Open-Minded Atheist

In her post, Faema shared that she became an atheist after she studied philosophy, and that she doesn’t have any issues with Christians or Christianity.

But now she is thinking about how she will respond to a five-year-old when she starts asking about Jesus and Christianity.

She Said What!?

So Faema wrote Emily again and said, “Please explain to me why you thought it appropriate after our last conversation to proselytize to my child?”

As a reply, Emily wrote, “I’m sorry. I figured you wouldn’t mind given you espoused the virtues of atheism in your home that I at least provide a counter to your blasphemy. Children should be allowed to decide whichever path they wish on their own.”

No More Play Dates

Faema’s response was simple. “I will no longer be letting my child over to your house unsupervised, and your child is no longer welcome over at ours unsupervised. I will be taking further actions as necessary through the school. I advise you not to weaponize your child in this and allow them to continue to be friends, however, should you fail this I will seek a no-contact order and go to the police to report your harassment.”

Being Forced to Practice a Religion Puts a Kid Off

Faema shared this experience with Reddit and hundreds of Redditors shared their thoughts on the situation.

One Reddit user wrote, “I can say that being forced to practice religion as a child, really did not help my belief system. I just remember being bored. Then I grew up and realized religion is silly. At least for me.”

They’re Too Young to Understand

Another Redditor commented, “It should be forbidden to indoctrinate children in any religious belief system until they are at least 14 years old and start to understand the whole concept.

It’s absurd that most western constitutions grant the right of religious freedom but children, the only ones who need that right gets enforced, are the ones who don’t get it at all.”
