In April 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed rules to prohibit the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.

In 2009, The Tobacco Control Act gave the FDA authority to regulate the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products.

The FDA Commissioner, Robert Califf, released a statement, saying, “The authority to adopt tobacco product standards is one of the most powerful tools Congress gave the FDA.”

Increasing the Chances of Smokers Quitting

Califf claims that the “actions [they] are proposing can help significantly reduce youth initiation and increase the chances that current smokers quit.”

Menthol Is Addictive

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Menthol enhances the effects of nicotine on the brain and can make tobacco products even more addictive.”

Less Harsh

The menthol in cigarettes creates a cooling sensation in the throat, which makes it easier to inhale the smoke because it feels less harsh. 

Brazen Overreach

One person who commented on the story online said that the “proposed ban on menthol cigarettes” is a “brazen overreach.” This person said, “Congress might have the power to legislate such a ban,” but the FDA should not.
