In a recent podcast, Joe Rogan and Bill Maher, both self-described liberals, critiqued progressive policies. They discussed “woke” politics, raised questions about the authenticity of the Black Lives Matter movement, expressed concerns about “gender-affirming care,” and delved into the challenges of equity versus equality. Here’s a recap of their conversation.
Maher Is a Reasonable Liberal
Rogan’s opinion of Maher, “I think they look at you like a guy who they’re worried about because you don’t tow the line. You’re like a 90s liberal. You’re like liberals back when they were more reasonable, before they became leftists.
Every Liberal Is a Leftist
And now every liberal, kind of has to be a leftist. If you want to be on the team, you got to subscribe to the most fringe ideas that the team is promoting.”
Woke Doesn’t Mean Liberal
Maher wanted to make it clear that being woke and being liberal are not the same thing. He believes that woke ideologies often go against traditional liberalism.
Express Your Own Opinions
Maher advised people to express their own opinions but not to claim they’re the same as his long-held liberal beliefs.
Colorblind Society
Maher expressed his belief on “The Joe Rogan Experience” that he, along with liberals, has always supported the idea of a colorblind society.
Kennedy to Martin Luther King’s Belief
He explained that the aim is to not consider race in any situation, which has been a shared belief among liberals, from Kennedy to Martin Luther King.
Woke Equals KKK Views
Maher pointed out that woke ideology differs from the liberal perspective, as they emphasize noticing race in all situations, which he finds interesting because it used to be the Ku Klux Klan’s position.
Equality Not Equity the Solution
Rogan chimed in, highlighting the significant problems of extreme poverty and crime. He expressed his effort to understand woke ideology but firmly believes that equality, not equity, is the best solution.
BLM Doesn’t Care About Black on Black Crime
Maher spoke of the rising crime in Chicago, and how the BLM movement doesn’t appear to be concerned about black-on-black violence.
Chicago Is Not Safe Anywhere
“Murders have been happening way out of control in Chicago among the African-American community for far too long and not really reported in the way that they should be,” Maher said. “It’s amazing how black lives don’t seem to matter when they are taken by black lives. Now, Chicago, my friends that live there say it’s not safe anywhere.”
Where Are the Community Leaders
“I don’t understand why there isn’t a more concerted effort to shine a spotlight on it,” Maher said, then asked, “Where are the leaders of the community?”
Social Media in Agreement or Not
The reaction on X (formerly Twitter) was mixed, however many users were united:
“Spot on” …. “Accurate” …. “He’s not wrong” …. “No argument”
Or Maybe Not
Another user replied “That’s interesting since the KKK is a republican-led southern conservative organization… BTW, the KKK all vote 100% GOP and have for over 50 years.”
People Do See Race First
Another also disagreed, stating “That’s a lie!! The problem is that everyone does see race first, that’s the first impression. Someone sees a clean cut white person not a threat. Someone sees a tattoo covered white skin person as a possible threat , someone sees an olive skin person as a possible threat. Black person as Danger”.
Childhood Mutilation
Rogan and Maher also discussed genital mutilation and so-called “transgender care” for minors.
Rogan’s thoughts were, “It’s terrifying that they’re calling it ‘gender-affirming care,’ when it’s really childhood mutilation,”
Too Young to Make That Decision
Rogan said. “Before you have the ability to figure out what ‘permanent’ means. You’re only 7 years old, you can’t get your face tattooed, you can’t go to war, you can’t get married, there’s reasons for all that stuff, you’re too young,” the podcaster claimed.
Puberty Blockers Are Irreversible
Rogan also went on to say that puberty blockers are “not reversible.”

Maher’s perspective was that the rush of some children wanting to change their gender is “trendy” and a “TikTok challenge that got out of hand.”
