Catnapped: “My Friend Stole My Cat!” But…Is There More to This Story?

After a bad breakup, a friend and her cat needed a place to crash, but when the friend moved out, she left the cat and stopped picking up her calls. The friend now says the cat is hers.

OP temporarily took in E and her cat after a bad breakup with her boyfriend.

They stayed at her place for about two weeks, because they had nowhere else to go.

When E left OP’s place, she left the cat behind and disappeared without any explanation.

All OP found was a note saying she was going to stay with her parent for a while, but the cat was still there.

Delayed Response

OP had called E many times but received no response until a week later, when E finally replied, explaining her father was allergic to cats.

She asked OP to take care of it until her living situation improved.

Taking Care of the Cat

OP initially agreed, but after weeks of no response from E, she assumed E no longer wanted the cat and started taking care of him as her own.

She got him neutered, microchipped, and paid all his vet bills, all the while never hearing anything from E.

Making Demands

After five months of no contact, E suddenly called OP and demanded to take the cat back.

Not Happening

OP refused, saying she had been taking care of the cat all this time, and that E couldn’t just abandon him and expect her to hand him over without any consequences.

E said she was being cruel and STOLE the cat from her.

She said her living situation was out of her control, but she always intended to take him back.

Feeling Guilty

Mutual friends started contacting OP after E started telling everyone she had stolen the cat from her.

This caused OP to feel guilty and wonder if she had been too harsh on her friend.

Take Responsibility

While OP sympathizes with E’s difficult situation, she believes E’s actions have consequences and need to take responsibility for the cat.

Grown Attached

OP had grown attached to the cat and had taken good care of him, and she didn’t want to hand him over to someone who had abandoned him without any explanation.

Cats Deserve More

SunnyHill said, “If she was so worried about the cat, what prevented her from picking up a phone?”

Another user wrote, “She abandoned the cat and you took financial responsibility for him. She dodged messages and texts. Obviously, the cat was not important enough to her to care for or even have a conversation with you about.”

Hllldff put it bluntly, “E’s situation doesn’t excuse her actions. Like many who adopted “pandemic pets”, she has to face the reality that the cat is a living creature and a commitment, one that she already forfeited.”
