“Perhaps Trans Kids Are Like Trees and Need Pruning?” – Church Launches Non-Profit Program To Support Transgender Minors Amid Texas Anti-Trans Healthcare Law

In response to Texas Senate Bill 14, which restricts access to gender-affirming care for Trans minors, Fort Worth’s Galileo Church has come forward to support the affected families. Here’s the whole story.

The Non-Profit Program

This move includes the creation of the North Texas TRANSportation Network (NTTN), a non-profit program dedicated to easing the burden of out-of-state healthcare travel expenses for families with transgender or gender-diverse children.

The Anti-Trans Law

The NTTN has emerged as a help for families grappling with the repercussions of SB14.

This law, signed into effect during June’s pride month and implemented in August, posed a significant challenge for transgender minors seeking essential gender-affirming care.

The Restrictions

Under SB14, access to critical treatments like puberty blockers and hormone therapies became restricted for individuals under 18, along with legal penalties for medical providers offering such care to minors.

The NTTN’s Aim

The NTTN aims to provide practical assistance by offering grants of up to $1,000, which can be accessed twice a year per Trans minor.

The Funds

These funds are intended to cover a wide range of expenses related to out-of-state healthcare travel, including transportation, accommodation, medical appointments, prescriptions, and even income replacement for time away from work.

While $1,000 may not cover all costs associated with such trips, the NTTN hopes it will provide a substantial relief.

No Proof Required

Crucially, the NTTN respects the privacy and dignity of families seeking assistance.

Unlike many programs, the NTTN does not require families to provide “proof” of medical care.

The Eligibility

Instead, eligibility hinges on residence within the North Texas region and having a Trans or gender-diverse child in need of healthcare.

Plans to Serve Many Families

Recognizing that approximately 30,000 transgender minors reside in Texas, comprising 10 percent of the national trans-minor population, the NTTN plans to serve as many families as possible.

The Director

The force behind the NTTN is its executive director, Cynthia Daniels, a mother of three who was deeply affected by the passage of SB14.

Just Being a Good Neighbor

Daniels said, “I’m a mother, I have three kids, and I have always been able to get the healthcare for my kids that they desperately needed. So, to me, it’s just being a good neighbor to a group of people who have been selected to not be able to receive their healthcare and to me that’s devastating.”

It’s a Success

Since its inception, the NTTN has received two applications for assistance, successfully funding one family’s healthcare journey.

The Assurance

All donations to the organization are directed entirely toward supporting families, ensuring that every dollar contributes to this critical cause.

The Church’s Mission

The Galileo Church has said in its mission statement that it is working toward “justice for LGBTQ+ humans and support the people who love them.”

The church’s website says, “We believe that God, through Christ, has welcomed all to God’s heart. Period.”

Seriously Hostile to LGBTQ+ Beloveds

“We announce ongoing justice work through social media – FB, Twitter, Insta – because we’re light on our feet, just trying to keep up in a world that can be suddenly and seriously hostile to LGBTQ+ beloveds,” it added.

Twitter Users Shared Their Views

Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.

One Twitter user wrote, “Non-profits are just job creators for a few where nothing actually has to happen except trying to get grants. So it’s probably harmless in real terms.”

A Strange Definition

Another user added, “It’s a strange definition of “grow” that involves cutting bits off…..perhaps Trans kids are like trees and need pruning?”

A third user commented, “We should just get rid of the concept of parenthood altogether! Children can make their own decisions regarding their welfare! Right??”
