A Reddit user asked the community if they were responsible for potentially evicting their neighbor after they complained about them.
A Small Neighborhood
The Original Poster (OP), a 27-year-old woman, resides in a small village in the UK in a terraced house.
The property that OP lives in is the only house on the street that is privately rented, as the landlord purchased it from the council long ago.
All other houses on the street are council-owned.
OP has been living in the house for approximately two years.
There is a neighbor named Helen, a 63-year-old woman, who has been a nuisance since OP moved in and apparently during her entire time living there.
Harassment About Everything
Helen harasses all the neighbors about trivial matters such as what time they take their bins out, the level of fullness of their recycling bins, and more.
Welcome to the Neighborhood…Not!
Upon OP’s arrival, Helen made several remarks about how she despises having a young person move in and how OP would likely be a party animal.
No Time to Party
However, OP is in fact a hard-working individual with a full-time job and is pursuing her Ph.D., leaving her with no time for parties and hardly home during the weekdays.
A couple of months ago, Helen disapproved of a tree in OP’s front garden that blocked the light from reaching her garden.
OP resolved the issue by trimming the branches so that they would no longer interfere with Helen’s garden.
Not Good Enough
Subsequently, Helen expressed dissatisfaction with the trimmed branches, stating they were too short.
Noisy New Year’s Eve…Imagine!
Moreover, Helen complained to everyone but OP about the noise disturbance caused by a dinner party held during New Year’s.
Weekly Complaint Clinic
Since OP’s arrival, Helen has managed to find something to complain about at least once a week.
Girlfriend Moves In
However, since OP’s girlfriend moved in with them six months ago, Helen’s complaints have increased in frequency to nearly a daily basis.
Helen’s primary grievance is that OP’s girlfriend sometimes arrives home dirty and leaves mud on the communal path, although she always cleans it up.
OP’s girlfriend works as a field archaeologist, which requires her to get dirty, but no other neighbor seems to mind this, as confirmed by OP’s inquiries.
Overstepping the Boundary
Last week marked the tipping point for OP.
As part of her thesis work, OP had several male interviewees over to her home, which Helen seemed to misconstrue.
She approached OP’s girlfriend and accused OP of cheating, stating that she had 10 male callers over that week when it was just three elderly French men.
Argument and Accusations
This accusation triggered a huge fight between OP and her girlfriend, both of whom were initially bewildered before eventually realizing the misunderstanding.
Making a Complaint
Following this incident, OP filed a complaint with the local council.
Three Strikes and You’re Out
Without OP’s knowledge, the council had a “three strikes and you’re out” policy, and OP’s complaint was the third received against Helen.
As a result, Helen now faces the possibility of being forced to move or be evicted in her 60s.
OP did not intend for this outcome to happen. However, since then, Helen has aggressively confronted OP and her girlfriend whenever she sees them.
Did It Go Too Far?
Many Reddit users commented that OP is not in the wrong in this situation and that Helen’s behavior led to her eviction.
They pointed out that she was already on her second warning and knew the consequences of her actions. Additionally, many users expressed sympathy for OP and noted that she had tried to be a good neighbor by complying with some of Helen’s demands. Users also highlighted the fact that Helen’s harassment went on for two years, making her eviction understandable.
Not Her Fault
One Reddit user wrote “The other 2 strikes are not your fault or your business or anything to feel guilty of. She got herself into that mess. The fact that she told your partner you were ‘cheating’ when you are innocent is completely disgraceful.”
