During his announcement, Phillips shared the need to address the situation at the southern border, a matter that has long been a top concern for Republican voters.
It Is Inhumane
Despite being a member of the same party, Phillips did not hold back in his criticism.
He said, “Right now, having been to the southern border twice, it is not secure. It is inhumane. It is not fair to those who are seeking refuge.”
We Can Do Better
He expressed concern for border patrol agents and criticized those who accuse those caring about border security of racism.
He said, “For someone to accuse those who care about border security as being racist, I think those people are being inhumane, and I think we can do better.”
Allocate Aid Money Effectively
Using his experience serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Phillips suggested that the United States could allocate aid money more effectively.
Corruption in a Lot of Places
He said, “It’s wasted. It fuels corruption in many places. Why do we not invest in the very countries from which migrants are coming because they’re persecuted, feel unsafe, or have no opportunity.”
Causes of Migration
“Why don’t we use American resources upstream to invest in those countries, so people have a safe place, they have opportunity, they have shelter and do not need to pour across our border,” he added.
The Presidential Campaign
Phillips, a millionaire businessman, cited the need for fresh leadership within the Democratic Party and said, “I am the Democratic candidate who can win the 2024 election.”
Trump May Win
He referred to polls suggesting former President Donald Trump could surpass Biden in a 2024 general election matchup.
A Proud Democrat
While Phillips has been critical of Biden, he emphasized his loyalty to the Democratic Party. He said, “I voted for his policies. I’m a Democrat. I’m a proud Democrat.”
Part of a Different Generation
Phillips added that Biden’s “a good man. That’s not why I’m doing this. I’m doing this because I’m listening to people all around the country who say they want a change. They want a new generation. That it’s time to go to the future… I’m part of a different generation that’s looking ahead.”
Will Support the Democratic Nominee
He also pledged his commitment to supporting the Democratic nominee in the 2024 presidential election, even if it’s not him.
