DeSantis’ History Lesson – Black People Benefited from Being Enslaved, Florida’s New ‘Alternative Facts’ Curriculum

Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, finds himself at the epicenter of national racial tensions following his endorsement of a controversial African-American history curriculum and remarks deemed insensitive. Black leaders and civil rights advocates, including the NAACP have issued a travel advisory for Florida, voicing strong objections.

In July, DeSantis claimed that “some Black people benefitted from being enslaved.”

He said his state’s new version of African American history standards that civil rights advocates say distorts the real U.S. history – the statement which quickly drew anger and raised eyebrows across the political spectrum.

“The Florida State Board of Education’s updated standards on how Black history will be taught are an affront to the Black community.

Our children deserve nothing less than truth, justice, and the equity our ancestors shed blood, sweat, and tears for,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of NAACP in a statement posted on the website.

“Total Farce”

“Claiming that Florida is unsafe is a total farce,” DeSantis said in a conversation with Elon Musk.

“I mean, are you kidding me? You look at cities around this country, they are awash in crime. In Florida, our crime rate is at a 50-year low.”

Months later, DeSantis had to respond to the deadly shooting that was fueled by racism. “We are not going to let people be targeted based on their race,” DeSantis said.

Even though he called the shooter “a major-league scumbag,” he was booed at the vigil.

Rev. Jeffrey Rumlin, pastor of The Dayspring Church in Jacksonville, where three Black people were gunned down at a Dollar General store, criticized DeSantis for not openly describing the killer as “a racist” at a Sunday vigil in Jacksonville.

“Gov. DeSantis has created and pushed a narrative of division and hate that is anti-Black,” said Rumlin.

More Radical Policies

DeSantis has made a name for himself attacking the LGBTQ community, fighting with Disney and most recently, severely restricting abortion rights in Florida.

While he regularly calls out liberal policies of the Biden Administration, his recent policies and statements have become more radical in recent months.

Still, he defended Florida’s new curriculum, which includes remarks for middle school instruction that “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

DeSantis’ team rejected the notion that he did not adequately condemn the weekend shooting and has ignored the concerns of the African-American community in Florida.

False Talking Points

“This shooting was a terrible tragedy, and it is reprehensible that The Associated Press has decided to collect and amplify false talking points as ‘reporting’ on this horrific event,” said DeSantis campaign spokesman Bryan Griffin.

“Ron DeSantis has condemned these racially motivated murders repeatedly in the strongest language possible. … He will not tolerate racial hatred or violence in Florida, and we reject your politicization of this horrible event,” Griffin said.
