The Condition Was Severe
Medical professionals detailed the woman’s case in Urology Case Reports, highlighting the severity of her condition.
Seeking Specialized Care
She was transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney for a review of her urology and burns injuries.
Tests Were Done
Examination revealed necrosis, or dead tissue, at the tip of the penis and burns, swelling, and redness along the penile shaft.
She Had Been Taking ADT
Prior to the injury, the patient had been undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), which suppresses the production of male hormones responsible for physical characteristics such as facial and body hair growth and deepening of the voice.
She Had to Stop
However, she had to discontinue the therapy after relocating to a rural area.
Tests conducted by medical professionals revealed that necrosis had not spread to the urethra and bladder, but there was an increase in dead tissue when changing dressings.
An Emergency Operation Was Done
In light of the worsening condition and rising inflammatory markers, indicating inflammation in the body, the medical team had no choice but to perform an emergency partial penectomy.
Complex Procedure
This procedure involves the removal of dead tissue and the creation of an opening for the urethra, preserving as much of the urethra as possible for potential future gender-affirming surgery.
She Was Monitored and Discharged
Following the operation, the patient was monitored for eight days before being discharged and referred to a specialist in transgender surgery.
No Complications
Fortunately, there were no recorded complications after the procedure.
