Today’s tale of in-school drama comes from a young Redditor aged 16. They’re partly disabled and have been since their youth. Yesterday he got into an argument with another person in his class who’s also disabled, and he wants to know if they were in the wrong in the situation. Let’s investigate.
Disabled and Autistic
Our protagonist is disabled, using forearm crutches and occasionally a wheelchair to get around due to ME/CFS and an old injury that never healed correctly.
He also happens to be neurodivergent, specifically with autism.
An Ordinary Day
The story begins on an ordinary day at school for the original poster (OP).
As he makes his way to his chemistry class, he spots a girl that he personally dislikes due to years of microaggressions.
She’s 17 and is the most obnoxious girl he’s ever met.
She interrupts class to talk to teachers about personal issues, uses a rolling box that always gets in the way, and complains about it constantly.
The rolling box is a mess and contains trash from a field trip they went on a month ago.
Her Behavior Is Frustrating
OP finds it particularly frustrating that she doesn’t use a backpack like everyone else, especially since the box always gets in his way, and he needs the accessible class seats because he cannot walk.
She complains about the box all the time, but he has never seen her actually use anything from it.
Not a Competition
She likes to compare their disabilities and say hers are worse without ever disclosing what she has.
OP physically can’t walk without support, but the girl can walk just fine.
She has also reported OP to school security for wearing a teenage mutant ninja turtles hoodie because it had weapons on it!
Things Go Off!
This day he sat in the accessible seat in his chemistry class, which is low to the ground and has shorter seats to accommodate his wheelchair.
When the obnoxious girl walked in, she started getting mad at him!
She got in his face and said that one day she was going to get to his accessible seat before him because she needed the extra space for her box!
He Lost It
After five years of dealing with her behavior, OP finally lost his temper.
He yelled at her, “Oh my god, dude. You do not need that box! You are not special. Shut up, please. I hate you. Stop acting like we’re friends! We are not. I hate you so much. Leave me alone. You annoy me so much! I need this more than you. I can’t walk, dude!”
OP was so angry that tears were running down his face.
The girl also started crying and left the room, leaving the rolling box and only taking her backpack that she kept in the box!
OP’s friend walked him out of the room and took him on a walk around the school to calm down a bit.
Now, OP is wondering if he did the right thing and if he was wrong for yelling at a disabled girl and making her cry.
He felt bad about what he did, but he didn’t know if he was wrong or if he had gone about it the right way.
Should He Apologise?
He knew he shouldn’t have lost his temper, but he couldn’t take her behavior anymore.
He wondered if he should apologize to her, but he wasn’t sure how to approach her after what had happened.
OP had gone to the vice-principal once to complain about the girl’s behavior, but the VP told him that her grandparents worked closely with the school and donated a lot of money and resources, so there wasn’t much they could do without risking anything!
It’s understandable that he feels frustrated and angry about this girl’s behavior. It’s never okay for someone to compare their disabilities with others or interrupt classes to talk about their personal issues.
However, yelling at her in class might not have been the best way to handle the situation. It’s understandable that the OP was angry, but his reaction may have been too extreme. It’s important to remember that she is also a human being with her own struggles and issues.
He could have talked to the girl privately, explaining how her behavior was affecting him and other students. He could have asked her to use a backpack instead of the rolling box or to find a way to make the box less obtrusive.
Being More Understanding
His experience serves as a reminder that we should all strive to be more empathetic and understanding toward others, especially those with disabilities. It’s essential to be mindful of how our words and actions affect others and to treat everyone with respect and dignity.
OP’s story also showcases how the administration’s inaction can perpetuate harmful behaviors. The fact that the girl’s grandparents have close ties to the school and donate a lot of money and resources should not excuse her disruptive behavior. All students should be held to the same standards, regardless of their familial or financial connections to the school.
Reddit users comforted this teenager. One user said, “Being disabled doesn’t give someone a free pass to be rude and annoying to you for the last 5 years. This one out burst is understandable because of issues listed.“
