Former Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming called Donald Trump the “single most dangerous threat we face” in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper. Read on for her thoughts on the 2024 presidential election and her plans for the future.
“He Cannot Be the Next President”
Speaking with Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” Liz Cheney spoke candidly about her thoughts on Trump’s political future. “He cannot be the next president,” she said.
Cheney Concerned About Trump Going Unchecked
Cheney said that her biggest concern was that Trump would have “no guardrails” and that he could accomplish everything he hoped during his first term but was stopped by “responsible people around him.”
Will Cheney Run for President?
After Tapper asked her if she would consider running for president in 2024, Cheney said she is not ruling it out.
But her focus is supporting candidates who “believe in the Constitution and who take their responsibilities seriously to Congress.”
“We’re Electing Idiots”
In June, Cheney said that the country has begun to “create a situation where we’re electing idiots,” and said that she would definitely not run for president if doing so would split votes and result in a Trump victory.
“Trump Can’t Be Anywhere Near the Oval Office”
“I’ve never believed something as strongly…the single most important thing for the country is Donald Trump can’t be anywhere near the Oval Office again,” she said at an event in New York.
Criticizing the Former President
During a commencement speech to the graduating class of Colorado College, Cheney criticized fellow Republicans and Donald Trump in a scathing callout.
“My Fellow Republicans Wanted Me to Lie”
“My fellow Republicans wanted me to lie. They wanted me to say that the 2020 election was stolen, that the attack of January 6th wasn’t a big deal, and that Donald Trump wasn’t dangerous,” Cheney told the graduates at her alma mater.
A Strong Political Background
Cheney has historically been a vocal critic of Donald Trump and his supporters, voting to impeach Trump after January 6th and regularly calling out her colleagues.
Cheney’s political future is unclear after three terms in the House of Representatives.

A Republican herself, Liz Cheney has made waves within her party as she has criticized her colleagues, notably for their support of Donald Trump.
Election Interference a Hot Spot
She has been censorious of those Republicans who supported Trump’s insistence that there was interference in the 2020 presidential election.
Weighing In On A Presidential Bid
As for whether she is going to run for president herself in 2024, Cheney was noncommittal.
Cheney Wants To “Elect Sane People”
“I’ll tell you what I’m definitely going to do,” she said. “I’m going to spend the next year between now and the election certainly helping to elect serious people, helping to elect sane people.”
We Need “People Who Believe in the Constitution,” Says Cheney
In an interview with “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan, Cheney confirmed her position. “…what I will continue to do is very much focus on making sure that we get people elected at all levels who are serious, people who believe in the Constitution.”
On A Potential Presidential Run: “I’m Not Going To Rule It Out”
As of now, Cheney is not confirming or denying a 2024 bid. “Look, I think that we have to have good people, and I don’t know yet what that is going to look like,” she said. “I’m not going to rule it out.”
