“He wouldn’t even hold her if she cried” – a husband takes things too far when he becomes suspicious about the birth of his youngest child. After demanding his wife take a paternity test, turning his family against her, and neglecting their child, it takes a devastating toll on their marriage. Here’s what went down.
Trouble in Paradise
After the birth of their third child, Martina and her husband Peter began to face some serious relationship problems.
Her own husband was in doubt that their child was his, which eventually spiraled into months of pain and frustration for his wife.
Her Husbands Doubts
It was such a difficult time in their lives that it fractured their relationship, potentially beyond repair.
A distraught Martina eventually turned to Reddit to share her experience and ask for advice on where to go next.
One of These Things Is Not Like the Other
Martina and Peter’s problems began as soon as their first child was born.
While their first two sons looked very similar to their father, with pale skin and dark eyes and hair, their daughter did not resemble either of her parents.
Instead, she was born with very pale blond hair and green eyes. And this was a problem for Peter.
She Has Her Great-Grandparents Eyes
The issue was that neither of them had these features, and neither did their daughter’s grandparents.
Martina explained that her great-grandparents had the same hair and eye color, which must have skipped two generations.
But he was immediately suspicious of his daughter’s parentage, and no explanations could soothe his fears.
A Painful Question
According to Martina, the trouble started from the moment he laid eyes on the baby. Furious, Peter demanded a paternity test from his tearful wife.
She was shocked by the request and refused it, hoping he would come to realize that his fears were unfounded. To her horror, things only got worse…
“Two Months of Hell”
Instead of accepting their daughter as his own, Peter spent the first two months of her life neglecting both his wife and child.
He refused to look after or even hold the newborn himself, leaving all of the childcare to his stressed and exhausted wife. She couldn’t understand it.
A Contradictory Father
Martina noted that his treatment of their daughter was starkly different from that of their sons.
When their previous two children were born Peter had been a caring and devoted father, but his behavior during this period had caused it to be “the worst experience of [her] life,” in Martina’s own words. And it was only about to get worse.
Getting the Family Involved
It wasn’t just Peter who was upset. Upon seeing their baby, Peter’s entire family turned their backs on Martina and her child.
They shared his suspicions, believing that Martina had been unfaithful and birthed an illegitimate child.
A Second Betrayal
This was a further knife in the back for the devastated mother. Since her own family and friends lived far away, she had now been abandoned by her entire support system.
What’s more, her baby had colic (prolonged periods of crying and fussiness), adding further stress to an already terrible situation.
Birthday Party Gone Wrong
Things came to a head during their son’s birthday party. Upon arrival, none of Martina’s in-laws acknowledged her or the baby, leaving them both to sit alone during the festivities.
When they refused to even include her daughter in the celebration photos, Martina realized she was at the end of her tether.
She Finally Gives In
The new mother understood that none of her tears or protesting would change their minds.
In utter despair, Martina finally gave in to her husband’s requests and ordered a paternity test. The results were shocking.
Reality Check
Well, they were shocking for Peter and his family at least. The test came back positive, just as Martina knew it would. The baby was his and no one else’s.
The Guilt Sets In
Both Peter and his family were shocked and apologized profusely for their behavior.
Peter in particular was guilt-ridden, realizing he had not only neglected his vulnerable wife who was still recovering from childbirth, but he had pretty much abandoned his own child.
And all because he refused to trust Martina.
One Caveat
Despite everything that had happened, she accepted her husband’s apology, feeling his remorse was genuine.
Unfortunately, she could not find it in herself to forgive his family, who had “treated [her] really badly and said horrible things”. She chose to cut off contact with her in-laws for the time being, and her husband agreed.
Something Doesn’t Feel Right
Now that all was said and done Martina was ready to return to normal. But her husband was still wracked with guilt, continuing to apologize and breaking down into tears every time he held their daughter.
She felt dissatisfied, writing “I want us to be happy as we were before, but how can we move on?”
It Might Not Be Enough
After those hellish months of neglect, Martina and Peter are considering couples therapy. But is it enough to save their marriage?
Much of Reddit disagreed, with one Redditor asking, “Have you ever broken a piece of pottery and then tried to glue it back together? It’s never the same.”
Eager to Put Her Family Back Together
However, Martina seems eager to put the past behind her and keep their family together.
