The family of Alyona Dixon, a 24-year-old woman who tragically passed away due to septic abortion complications, has initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Las Vegas.
Seeking a Medically Induced Abortion
Alyona Dixon’s unfortunate demise occurred on September 28, 2022, less than a week after she sought medical assistance from a Planned Parenthood clinic for a medically induced abortion, as reported by KLAS-TV.
It Started With a Visit to Planned Parenthood
After visiting Planned Parenthood, she subsequently visited St. Rose Dominican’s Blue Diamond campus in Las Vegas, complaining of severe lower abdominal pain that had commenced the day before.
She Underwent Many Tests
According to the lawsuit, Dixon was discharged on September 26 after undergoing a series of tests.
Instructions to Follow-Up
The medical records indicate that she was provided with instructions to follow up with a gynecologist and advised to visit the emergency room if her symptoms worsened.
She Went Back to the Emergency Room
The following night, on September 27, at approximately 11 p.m., she presented herself at the emergency room, reporting vaginal bleeding.
The Horrifying Symptoms
The attending physician’s assessment painted a dire picture, including symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, severe dehydration, acute renal failure, leukocytosis, sepsis, lactic acidosis, hypokalemia, sinus tachycardia, metabolic acidosis, pulseless electrical activity, and respiratory failure.
She Was Quickly Transferred
After initially improving following treatment, Dixon was slated for transfer to a Clark County hospital.
Her Condition Was Deteriorating
Her condition abruptly deteriorated while still in the emergency room.
The Chaos in the Emergency Room
Her heart rate surged to 150 beats per minute, and she encountered difficulties in breathing.
Medical personnel attempted intubation and sedation, but during the procedure, she vomited, and her heart ceased functioning.
Last Attempts to Save Her Life
Despite resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at 5:32 a.m. on September 28. The Clark County Office determined the cause of death to be “complications from septic abortion.”
The Family Sues the Hospital
The family’s lawsuit against Dignity Health contends that the hospital’s medical staff failed to recognize the severity of Dixon’s condition during her September 26 visit and neglected to provide appropriate care.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for various expenses, including medical bills, funeral costs, burial expenses, special damages, compensatory damages, and punitive damages, which collectively exceed $15,000.
She Left Behind a Husband and Son
It also seeks general compensation for Dixon’s husband and son.
The Legal Team Behind the Case
The legal action has been filed by Kimball Jones and Mark Rouse of Bighorn Law.
Words From Her Lawyer
Mark Rouse stated, “The death of Alyona Dixon was tragic and devastating for her young family,” Rouse said Friday.
‘Defendants Should Be Held Accountable’
He continued, “Alyona loved kids and hoped to one day operate a kid’s play center. Unfortunately, she will never have that opportunity. We believe the evidence will show that Alyona’s death was preventable and that the defendants should be held accountable for their conduct.”
