Planning a group trip can be hard to organize and schedule, but this woman found her trip arrangements spoiled by an unlikely group member…her partner! Could she go it alone or would ‘playing gooseberry’ on a couples’ trip cost too much?
An Upcoming European Vacation
The Original Poster (OP) is a 25-year-old who has been organizing a trip to Europe with her sister and her partner since January.
Everyone Was Excited
Everyone was really excited about the trip, and most importantly, her 24-year-old partner always supported any plans.
A Major Change in Plans
But in March, their plans changed from a trip to the Mediterranean and Italy to choosing Oktoberfest and Austria in the fall.
Beer, Not Bella Vistas
This decision to change the plans was made since the boys weren’t as excited about a trip to Italy as the girls.
Italy vs. Germany Showdown!
OP’s partner had previously visited Italy, while the other wanted to attend Oktoberfest and preferred to visit Germany.
Hours of Meticulous Planning
Since then, OP and her sister have spent roughly 100 hours planning to make sure their week and a half of travel, which will take them to five different cities in two nations, goes smoothly.
The Boys Didn’t Contribute
Apart from the nod when pricing was discussed and confirming that they appeared to be planning a good trip, the boys offered little to no assistance.
Gushing With Anticipation!
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when OP was visiting her long-distance boyfriend and was gushing about how thrilled she was, how well they did, and showed images of the locations they were going, he simply smiled and said he couldn’t wait to travel with her.
An Unexpected Need to Talk
But then on Saturday, while they were on a call with other members of their friend group, OP’s partner said he wants to speak with her alone about something.
He Dropped the Bombshell
OP thought maybe it was about his preparation for professional examinations for his job. But, instead, he unexpectedly said that he no longer believed he could join the trip.
He Had New Money Worries
OP asked what the reason was and he responded that he was trying to keep his expenses in check.
Can’t Take Time Off
He was also worried about taking time off because he had just started a new job, which, as OP points out, doesn’t begin for another five months.
Would He Be in Her Debt?
OP told him that was no problem and that she would front the money now and he could pay her later. But then a while later he said he didn’t want to do that.
So Last Minute!
To make matters worse, the partner only told the others about his decision to cancel the trip after they were ready to buy their tickets.
Disappointment and Frustration
The other two people in the group were understandably upset, as they had also put a lot of time and effort into planning the trip.
Expensive Third Wheel
OP was torn between wanting to go on the trip with her partner, who she had planned to spend some quality time with, and not wanting to make the trip more expensive for everyone else by splitting the lodging three ways instead of four.
It Was Meant to Be Romantic!
She also didn’t want to be the third wheel on what was supposed to be a romantic trip.
So OP took to Reddit to ask for opinions on whether she was wrong.
Redditors supported OP and said that what her partner did was wrong.
He Had Plenty of Notice
One Reddit user wrote, “Ew, this is super flaky behavior on his end. You have given him plenty of notice and this has been talked about for what sounds like months and he’s had plenty of time to prepare.
You’re even prepared to bend over backward to make things work for him. It sounds to me like he either doesn’t have the money (which should have come up earlier) and doesn’t want to tell you, or he doesn’t want to go (which definitely should’ve come up earlier).”

Another Redditor asked whether OP could change her plans and maybe take another friend or family member so the costs will come down.
