During a guest appearance on CNN’s the lead with Jake Tapper, Alyssa Farah Griffin, the former white house director of strategic communications, expressed her disapproval of Florida Governor Ron Desantis’ recent campaign message.
The Talk Show
Jake Tapper, the host of the show, reminded Griffin of the Desantis ad that attacked Donald Trump for being too supportive of LGBTQ+ individuals and protecting their rights.
The Situation
Tapper went on to say, “So Bleeding Heartland reports that this mailing was sent to some Iowa households over the weekend after DeSantis’ viral campaign video received backlash.
It’s obviously not sincere. It’s thanking Donald Trump for standing up for LGBTQ rights. It calls him a transgender trailblazer, but it’s not from a real LGBTQ group.”
The Language Didn’t Sit Right With the Message
He went on to add “It actually uses language that opponents of the Trans community use, referring to biological males and such and such. This is a classic Iowa dirty trick. What do you think?”
She Had Previously Supported Desantis
Griffin, who had previously supported Desantis after speaking out against Donald Trump, expressed her disappointment with the homophobic ad released by the Desantis campaign on the last day of pride month.
Griffin Expressed Her Disgust
She said that she could never support him after seeing something disgusting like that.
The Homophobic Ad
The ad featured clips of the former president holding a pride flag and claiming to protect LGBTQ people.
Exaggerated Stereotypes
The ad also included portrayals of drag queens and hyper-masculine men with exaggerated stereotypes.
What Made Trump Win
Griffin pointed out that one of the factors that propelled Trump to victory in 2016 was his avoidance of culture war issues such as marriage equality, which was seen as a settled matter.
The Current Generation Supports LGBTQ Rights
She argued that regardless of political affiliation, her generation would not regress on LGBTQ rights.
Desantis Is Following an Outdated Version
According to Griffin, Desantis is aligning himself with an outdated version of the Republican Party that no longer exists.
This Might Cost Votes
The 34-year-old highlighted that Desantis’s approach might cost him votes since a majority of Republicans, approximately 67 percent, support increased protections for the LGBTQ community rather than rolling them back.
Politicians Need to Replan
She emphasized the need for politicians to recognize the evolving attitudes within their party and society as a whole.
