He Has Two Successful Sons
OP is a 50-year-old man who has two sons with his first wife, both in their late 20s and both successful.
He Remarried and Gained a Stepson
OP got remarried in 2019, and his new wife has a 20-year-old son who lives with the couple.
OP and the younger man don’t have much in common, and they struggle to get along.
They Have No Shared Interests
For one thing, OP loves sports, and his sons were accomplished athletes in high school.
But his stepson has no interest in sports at all, which OP sees as a missed opportunity for them to bond.
His Stepson Has Problems
OP says that he has never had a father-son relationship with his stepson and probably never will.
He Puts a Roof Over His Head
But OP takes care of the young man financially, since they live under the same roof and OP is the provider.
He Is Very Apathetic About His Future

For starters, OP’s stepson flunked out of college, which he wasn’t too interested in anyway.
He said he was going to work for a friend who plans to start a company when he graduates.

From there, OP’s stepson moved on to Starbucks but quit soon after because he couldn’t get up for the morning shift.

He Pulled Some Strings and Got Him a Job
Finally, OP called in a favor from a friend who runs a landscaping crew and who agreed to hire the stepson.
After several no-call/no-shows and an argument over the young man’s cell phone use on the job, the boss fired him.
He’s an Embarrassment
OP was mortified because the foreman was his buddy!
He Tries to Avoid Him
After that, OP just tried to avoid his stepson in the house.
He admits to pretty much giving the young man the silent treatment.
Coddled By Mommy
Then one day recently, OP heard his wife talking to her son and coddling him as usual.
At some point, she told him that it was okay that he had lost some jobs and didn’t have things figured out yet.
He Reached a Breaking Point
That’s when OP busted into the conversation.
He said that his stepson’s behavior was definitely not okay and then called the young man a “loser.”
Ranting and Cursing
OP was nearly yelling at that point.
He continued his tirade by saying that if he had his way, he’d kick the stepson out of the house.
He Wouldn’t Stop His Tirade of Built Up Resentment
OP’s wife jumped to her son’s defense, and OP could see she was angry and hurt.
But he kept going, telling her that the stepson had been babied for far too long and couldn’t even hold down a job that most 15-year-olds could handle.
Boo Hoo Baby
The stepson started crying and said the day his mom married OP was the low point of his life.
Maybe It Was the Kick He Needed
In a follow-up, OP reports that he apologized to his stepson for blowing up at him.
He also said the young man is applying for jobs again, so maybe the fight was the kick in the pants the kid needed.
