He Thought He Was Straight Until He Met His Husband
Neil is a 27-year-old man who spent the first two-thirds of his life thinking he was straight. But when he met his future husband in college, he knew in an instant this was his person.
They Were Surprised By the Family’s Reaction
The two have been inseparable ever since, and they’ve even been accepted by most of Neil’s family.
That was no sure thing, either, given that he grew up in a very conservative Texas town.
They Changed Over Time
But Neil’s dad took a job in Manhattan when he was 15, and that at least exposed the family to different ideas.
When he came out as bi in college, his dad and brother were immediately very supportive.
Mom Is There for Him
Neil’s mom took longer to come around, but she got over her initial hesitations and now loves her son and his husband. She’s on board with their marriage, too.
Not Everyone Agrees
Despite the progress made with most of the family, there are still holdout conservatives, particularly his aunt and uncle, who moved into his parent’s house in Texas when they relocated to New York.
It Was a Place to Crash
Neil’s parents charged his aunt and uncle a small amount of rent, and the couple let Neil and his family stay there when they came back for visits.
They Separated Them
It worked out well for several years, but things started to get tense while Neil was in college.
On one visit, he brought his then-boyfriend along, and the aunt and uncle didn’t want them to sleep in the same room.
They Avoided the Negativity
Since they weren’t married at the time, Neil went along with it, but it hurt his BF’s feelings. The next time they visited, the couple stayed in a hotel.
The Me Hit the Road
In a post-COVID visit to Texas, Neil, now happily married and residing in Vermont, returned “home” with both his brother and husband.
They Were All Welcome
And this time, Neil’s aunt and uncle insisted that the three men stay with them instead of in a hotel.
But There Were Conditions
After the aunt and uncle’s kids went to bed the first night, the five adults were discussing sleeping arrangements.
Neil’s aunt and uncle said he could sleep in the bedroom with his brother, while his husband slept on the couch.
They Thought He Was a Bad Influence
None of the men liked that idea, but the aunt and uncle said they didn’t want Neil and his boyfriend to influence their kids by sleeping together.
They didn’t consider the marriage to be “real” because the men were gay.
They Were Devastated
That made Neil see red with anger and sent his husband crying, fleeing onto the front porch.
He Gave Them One Chance to Fix It
He gave his aunt and uncle one chance to make things right. He told them that they needed to apologize to his husband immediately, or he’d ask his dad to throw them out.
It Wasn’t Even Their House
But the aunt and uncle doubled down, saying Neil needed to follow their rules in their house. He reminded them that it wasn’t really their house at all.
They Got Out of Dodge
By that time, the kids were awake and crying, but Neil couldn’t control his anger.
He finally stomped out of the house, and he and his husband left.
He Evicted Them
Neil made good on his promise and told his dad what had happened. Furious with the aunt and uncle, his dad served them with a 60-day eviction notice.
They Have Only Themselves to Blame
Now, Neil is taking a lot of heat from other members of his family, saying that it was his fault his young cousins were going to be homeless.
But he feels like there’s no one to blame except his aunt and uncle themselves.
