Do you ever wonder just how dirty the air that we use to dry our hands is, this woman does. So she tested the types and quantities of bacteria propelled into the air by common hand dryers versus basic air dryers. You’ll be shocked by the results.
Just How Dirty Is the Air?
The TikTok creator, @the_lab_life1, conducted an experiment using three different hand dryers from various locations, as well as air drying, to observe the types and quantities of bacteria propelled into the air.
The video demonstration has garnered over 28 million views, astonishing TikTok users with its findings.
In the footage, @the_lab_life1, who appears to work in a laboratory, showcases the bacteria left behind by a hand dryer in a shopping mall, a hand dryer in a movie theater, the hand dryer at her own workplace, and the air drying method.
Following the testing of each hand dryer, the Petri dishes containing the samples were placed in an incubator to foster controlled bacterial growth.
“Trigger warning around 50 seconds,” @the_lab_life1 captioned the video. Each hand dryer and the air drying method resulted in diverse bacteria. Surprisingly, the air drying method outperformed the hand dryers, according to the TikTok video. Even hand dryers equipped with blue lights purported to kill bacteria did not seem as effective as expected.
Rethink Your Choices
The TikTok video has ignited discussions and raised awareness of the potential bacterial risks associated with hand dryers, prompting users to rethink their hand-drying choices.
“And this is why I walk out of every bathroom with my hands dripping. Won’t catch me using a hand dryer,” one commenter says.
“I will never use a dryer again!” another user exclaims.
Someone else recalled, “When I was in the hospital to get into the NICU we had to wash our hands with soap and hot water for one minute and dry with paper towels.”
