Ron DeSantis, the Republican presidential hopeful and the Governor of Florida, has faced criticism for a homophobic anti-Trump advertisement, which he defended as “totally fair game.”
The Attack on Trump
The controversial video, posted on an account linked to DeSantis, attacked former President Trump’s 2016 pledge to protect LGBTQ+ citizens and celebrated DeSantis’ own anti-LGBTQ+ record.
The Homophobic Video
The ad, featuring clips from movies and TV shows such as American Psycho and Peaky Blinders, received condemnation from various quarters, including the LGBTQ+ conservative group Log Cabin Republicans.
It Faced Severe Backlash
Log Cabin Republicans described the advertisement as “divisive and desperate,” and the makers of the Show “Peaky Blinders” expressed disapproval of the unauthorized use of its clips.
DeSantis Defended It
Despite the backlash, DeSantis stood by the ad during an appearance on conservative commentator Tomi Lahren’s YouTube show.
He Gave His Reasons
He justified the video by arguing that it was fair to criticize Trump for apparently supporting LGBTQ+ rights while later making anti-trans statements.
The Trump Story
DeSantis specifically referred to Trump’s previous support for allowing Trans women to participate in the Miss Universe contest and highlighted the former president’s recent stance against transgender rights.
He Claimed Trump Injected Ideologies
The Florida governor claimed that Trump injected gender ideology into the mainstream and positioned himself as a defender of women’s rights against what he called the “social fad” of Trans rights.

He described the notion of gender fluidity as an attack on women’s rights and the truth itself.
Former Presidential Candidate Expressed His Concerns
The ad drew comments from former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.
Buttigieg questioned the mentality behind the ad and criticized the attempt to prove one’s worth by making life harder for a marginalized community.

He also found the association of DeSantis’ images with oiled-up, shirtless bodybuilders in the video peculiar and misguided.

DeSantis has not backed down from his conservative positions and anti-LGBTQ+ stance since announcing his presidential candidacy in May.

The severity of these attacks on LGBTQ+ Floridians has led the Human Rights Campaign to declare a “state of emergency.”

One Twitter user wrote, “I actually don’t know if I’m mentally ready to be on the internet for the upcoming election season.”

Another user commented, “This is genuinely one of the most insane campaign ads I’ve ever seen in my life. If politicians are now running *on* the fact they repress queer people and are called totalitarians, I believe it may suggest concerning things about the future of the country, but what do I know.”
