As the ripples of the 2024 presidential election begin to make waves, Change Research has dived into the depths of young voters’ minds, revealing some interesting findings.
Political Divide Across Gender Lines

The data casts light upon the perspectives of 1,033 voters aged 18-34.
Conducted from August 25 to September 1, the participants presented a diverse gender spectrum: 43% male, 45% female, and a mix of 5% trans, 6% nonbinary or gender nonconforming, and 1% other.
A deep dive into these responses unveils many unique trends and tidbits.
The Left-Leaning Gender Spectrum

There is a sharp gender divide in political outlooks.
While young men were more conservative in their outlook, their female, trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming counterparts identified largely as liberal.
Identifying Political Labels

41% of women embraced the progressive title, a big contrast to the mere 24% of men. Similarly, while 18% of men embraced the conservative label, only 11% of women did.
The MAGA sentiment also saw a pronounced skew, with 11% of men identifying with Trump’s brand compared to a mere 3% of women.
Green Flags

The realm of romantic green and red flags illuminates the gap between genders. For women, the ultimate green flags in potential partners were a love of reading, savvy deal-hunting, and vocal support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
On the flip side, men’s green flags were fairly aligned with women’s but included points such as believing in only two genders and gun ownership.
Red Flags

When it came to red flags, women’s list-topper was an association with MAGA politics, while for men, it was people who identified as communists.
Additionally, a distaste for the statement “All Lives Matter” was apparent across both genders.
Pop Culture Preferences by Gender

As for pop culture, the gender divide took center stage again.
While men preferred podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience and The Ben Shapiro Show, women leaned towards This American Life and The Daily.
Student Debt: A Universal Crisis

Across genders, the angst surrounding student debt was clear. The Supreme Court’s decision to thwart Biden’s loan relief plan was met with widespread disapproval.
Supreme Court’s Loan Relief Decision

Most young voters pointed fingers at the Court, Republicans in Congress, and special interest groups for the debacle.
The looming resumption of student loan payments has fueled apprehensions, with concerns ranging from managing sudden expenses to making ends meet.
A Dismal Economic Outlook

In a world grappling with inflation and rocketing rents, young voters are drowning in economic pessimism.
Inflation and Cost of Living Woes

With the cost of living and inflation topping their list of concerns, an overwhelming 66% of respondents viewed the national economy in a bad light.
This desolate outlook extended to their personal finances, housing, and even the value of a college education.
Voting Enthusiasm Peaks

Despite the prevailing gloom, there’s a silver lining: political engagement among young voters is soaring.
Intent to Vote in the 2024 Elections

A resounding 79% confirmed their intent to vote in the 2024 elections.
Preferred Political Candidates

If the elections were to happen today, Biden, paired with the Democratic US House of Representative candidates, would clinch the youth vote.
The Youth Vote in the 2024 Elections

As the 2024 elections inch closer, the voices of young voters – diverse, passionate, and often conflicted – are yearning to be heard.
