The controversy began when a Reddit user, requested ChatGPT to generate a “fake biblical passage” depicting “Jesus accepting Trans people.”
The Fake Story
The passage that resulted from this request tells the story of a woman whose heart is divided between her spirit and her body, seeking guidance from Jesus about how to find her place in the Kingdom of God.
Spirit and Body Are Not One
The AI-generated passage read, “And a woman, whose heart was divided between spirit and body, came before him.
In quiet despair, she asked, ‘Lord, I come to you estranged, for my spirit and body are not one. How shall I hope to enter the kingdom of God?'”
Unity Within Themselves
The passage continued, “Jesus looked upon her with kindness, replying, ‘My child, blessed are those who strive for unity within themselves, for they shall know the deepest truths of my Father’s creation.’”
There Is No Man nor Woman
“Be not afraid, for in the kingdom of God, there is no man nor woman, as all are one in spirit.
The gates of my Father’s kingdom will open for those who love and are loved, for God looks not upon the body, but the heart,” it concluded.
The Passage Provided Some Comfort
The Reddit user wrote, “I know it’s not real, but it gave me some comfort.”
“Trans-Affirming” Bible Verse
The Pro-LGBT outlet, The Advocate, was among the first to report on this “trans-affirming” Bible verse.
They portrayed the passage as an example of tolerance and inclusivity, suggesting that it could serve as a bridge between the LGBTQ+ community and religious institutions that have historically excluded them.
Critics’ View
However, as the post gained traction, many Christian scholars and columnists raised concerns about AI’s ability to replicate the intonation and style of the Gospel while potentially deviating from the original meaning.
There Is Some Truth to It
Messianic Jewish author and radio host Michael Brown, in an op-ed for the Christian Post, acknowledged that there is truth in the idea that in God’s kingdom, there is neither male nor female.
The Argument
However, he argued that this should not be misconstrued as a blurring of gender distinctions or an endorsement of transgender identities.
We Are All Equal in Jesus’ Eye
Brown wrote “Instead, as expressed by Paul (see Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:11), there is neither caste nor class in God’s kingdom — not Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or free. We are all equal in Jesus.”
Physical Alteration Is Not Accepted
He argued that Jesus would not advocate for drastic physical alterations, such as breast removal and hormone therapy, but instead would strive to make individuals “at home in the body they were created with.”
The Comparison
He compared the situation to Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), suggesting that Jesus would not amputate a limb for someone struggling with such a disorder but would seek to heal them from within.
Turning to Animals Is Not Allowed
Brown also drew parallels to people who identify as “furries” and argued against the notion of transforming them into the animals they identify with.
