Tensions ran high in Glendale, California last week as pro and anti-LGBTQ+ demonstrators clashed during a meeting of the Glendale Unified School District. The agenda item under discussion was the recognition of June as Pride Month.
Support and Opposition
Hundreds of people showed up to both protect and support the agenda item, with LGBTQ+ activists and supporters waving rainbow flags and opponents wearing “leave our kids alone” t-shirts and holding American flags.
Proud Boy Members
Several of the anti-LGBTQ+ protesters may have been Proud Boys members, according to reports that have surfaced.
Things Got Ugly
Things took a turn when members of both groups were seen punching one another violently in videos and photos that have been extensively shared on social media.
Violence Increased
As police attempted to diffuse the scene, people can be seen kicking and beating each other in North Jackson Street.
Unknown Where It Started
The police and the public don’t know how or who ignited the violence.
People Attacked for Beliefs
During the commotion, a man walked past a person waving a non-binary pride flag and punched them with his fist on the side of the head.
The Majority Protested Peacefully
The Glendale Police Department said in a statement on Wednesday that while the bulk of the protesters were peaceful, a “small number” of individuals wanted to cause problems and disruption.
Three Arrested
Three people were detained by police at the scene on several offenses, including unauthorized use of pepper spray and willful obstruction of law enforcement officials performing their duties.
Police Intervention
Police intervened inside the school board meeting to terminate the public comment time because of the situation outside, and they instructed those present to stay inside for a little while for their protection.
Meeting Suspended
Parents voiced opinions on both sides of the debate before its suspension, with the majority supporting LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and agenda.
School Forced to Make a Statement
The school was compelled to issue a statement to clarify the situation because erroneous information had been spread about what students are being taught and how the school’s LGBTQ+ policies actually function.
Clarified the Curriculum
As a result, the school shared a link to a document on social media that described the curriculum as well as broader policies about the rights of Trans kids, such as the usage of pronouns and access to areas like locker rooms.
