In a recent interview on CNN, Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Stacy Davis Gates found herself defending her decision to enroll her son in a private school—a move that has sparked accusations of hypocrisy given her vocal opposition to private education. Here’s the whole story.

CNN Primetime host Abby Phillip asked Davis Gates, “You’ve likened in the past private schools of today to quote ‘segregation academies’ of the Jim Crow South. Why then send your child to a private school after speaking out so publicly against them?”
She Spoke Out Against School Choice?
In response, Davis Gates clarified her position and said, “I didn’t speak out against private schools. I spoke out against school choice. School choice and private schools are two different entities.”
Phillip Pushed Further
Phillip, however, continued to challenge her, questioning whether she regrets the rhetoric she has used in the past.

Phillip asked, “In your tweet, you describe basically private, I mean, you’ve described private schools of the North. That was literally your language. But you’ve also said this, that school choice was the choice of racists. I think at the end of the day, people are asking here about whether the rhetoric matches your actions. What do you say to them?”
Based on Factual Information
Davis Gates said her past statements are based on factual information, particularly highlighting how private schools emerged to respond to school desegregation efforts like the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case.
The Hypocrisy
But Phillip argued that while Davis Gates exercised the freedom to choose a private school for her son, she hasn’t consistently advocated for the same choice for families in Chicago’s South Side and other urban areas.
The Letter
Phillip also read a letter written by Davis Gates explaining the nuances of sending her son to a private school.
Chicago Schools Are Unfunded
Davis Gates explained that she has two children currently in public school and argued that Chicago schools are unfunded.
Regret Rhetoric
As a response, Phillip said, “I totally understand the point that you’re making, but I do wonder, do you regret your own rhetoric here?”
Davis replied, “Regret rhetoric? What I’ve said are facts. Again, I’m a history teacher”
Choice Made for Her Family
Phillip concluded, “I also think that what you just described for your son is a choice that you made for your family, and I think that’s what your critics are pointing out here.”
