She Stole Her Daughter’s Identity to Avoid Jail but She Made Sure That’s Where Mom Ended Up

This story about a woman’s mom pretending to be her to avoid an arrest is unbelievable!

Failure to Appear Notice

She’s a 27-year-old woman who received a letter in the mail last Friday about a failure to appear for a citation she never got and the possible suspension of her license.

No Idea

She was worried all weekend as to what the citation was for and called her mom, who sounded equally concerned.

On Monday, she called the clerk’s office and asked about the citation.

Recall Memory

She told the woman she had no memory of any citation, and the lady on the other end seemed skeptical but said she could come to see the signature if she wanted.

A few months prior, the police had pulled her over for a faulty tail light, but they let her go with a warning.

Something’s Off

OP (the original poster) assumed the citation was related to that incident, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

The Ticket Wasn’t Hers

When OP arrived at the office, she saw the ticket and didn’t recognize the signature.

It was a poor signature, and she didn’t remember signing anything like that.

Feeling Helpless

She began crying because she knew she didn’t do it and felt helpless.

False Accusation

When she told the lady behind the counter, she accused her of claiming fraud, which is a felony.

A Serious Offence

OP nodded, took the ticket, and left, and it took everything in her not to cry the whole way out.

The ticket was for $274.00, and her license was at risk of being suspended

As she read the ticket more closely, she noticed that the car description wasn’t even hers – It was her brother’s car.

Suddenly, everything clicked!

Her Mom Used Her Name

That’s when she realized her mom must have used her name and information to avoid getting arrested.

Reveal the Truth

Her mother had driven her brother’s car while he was in jail and pretended to be her to avoid getting arrested. She had never received a ticket, and her mother had forged her signature!

Betrayed

When OP realized this, she got home and cried for two hours, feeling betrayed and violated.

She had never been in trouble before, and she couldn’t believe her own mother had done this to her!

Feeling Guilty

When she was home, her mom’s prying questions only made her look more guilty.

She decided to press charges against her mom, but it wasn’t an easy decision.

She Pressed Charges

She had been dealing with her parents’ chaos since she was 18, and she is now 27.

They had been in and out of prison for drug-related offenses, fraud, and prescription fraud.

She had been raided by the police when she was 17, and she had finally had enough.

Enough Is Enough

The following morning she went to the police station to file a report.

The officer who helped her was kind and helpful, and he told her that her mother’s actions constituted criminal impersonation.

Pressing Charges

OP could press charges against her mother, and since her mother already had a warrant out for her arrest, it would make the whole process easier.

Contact With Officer

The officer even updated OP on the situation later, telling her that he was working on filing the report and speaking to the officer who pulled her mom over that night.

The Police Are Called

Later that day, OP’s father called her to let her know that her mother was at her house, banging on the door.

She took the opportunity to call the officer and let him know that her mother was at her house.

Within minutes, the police arrived.

Admitting the Truth

They approached her mother and said, “You have pending charges against you for identity theft. Did you drive that car and use your daughter’s information?”

She admitted it right there and then!

She Felt Vindicated

Our storyteller felt a sense of vindication when the officer asked her mother, “Why would you do that to your own daughter?”

OP wanted to high-five this guy when he said that!

Unfair Treatment

She had been dealing with the chaos of her parents’ addiction and criminal behavior since she was 18, and she’d had enough. She didn’t think it was fair that she could be arrested and have her license suspended for something her mother had done.

Peace and Quiet

She planned to file a restraining order against her mother and felt relieved that she was finally going to have some peace and quiet. She had been diagnosed with PTSD as a result of dealing with her parents’ addiction and criminal behavior, and she didn’t feel guilty for pressing charges.

On Reflection

In the end, OP learned that she could stand up for herself and take action against her mother. She had been on the receiving end of her parents’ toxicity for too long, and she was ready to move on and heal from the trauma they had caused.

Courage and Triumph

Reddit users loved this woman’s story of how she escaped from the clutches of her uncaring mother. One user said, “You did well, and I am so proud of you for being brave enough to get justice on your own mother for what she had done to you. I’m sorry she also hurt you in that way.”

What do you think about the mom’s actions in this story? She’s behaved poorly, but should OP file charges against her?
