His daughter, R, is 12 and is on the autism spectrum.

Recently he faced a difficult situation with his daughter’s nanny (T).

T is a young college student who gets along famously with R.

He gives them a budget of $40 a month to cover things they do together, like activities or snacks.

Because R is on the spectrum, he does not pay for T to be R’s nanny.

R is entitled to benefits from the state agency they work with, which pays for the nanny’s services.

R has recently become a fan of the Star Trek series and collects old Star Trek books from used bookstores and thrift stores.

T often accompanies R after school and has been a great help in finding books for her.

While on vacation, T found a stack of about 35 books for R and texted her asking if she wanted them.

R said yes, but the text did not mention the cost or number of books.

Upon T’s return, she presented the books to R, stating they cost $50, which R did not have.

The $40-a-month budget he allotted for the girls was already spent.

A Disagreement

T then asked the father to cover the cost, which he refused, as he was unaware of the conversation.

T had never bought more than one or two books at a time before.

The father explained T should have clarified the number of books or double-checked with them before purchasing them.

T, however, was unable to return the books as they came from a thrift store.

He refused to pay for the books, and T left, leaving R upset.

Doubting Himself

Considering T’s financial situation, he wondered if he was wrong for not paying for the books.

The Response Online

One User wrote, “Sometimes it’s better to salvage an important relationship than to be right.

Pay for the books. Let T know that you can’t do so in the future, though, without talking about it. Tell her how much you appreciate her thoughtfulness, now and always.”

Another suggested, “Get your daughter a library card.”

OutrageouslyPenguin said, “Jesus, you’re stingy. You’re blessed with a thoughtful nanny who thinks of your child even when she’s not at work.”

Where They Are Now

He expressed his gratitude to T for considering R, apologized for the misunderstanding, and compensated her for the books.

They also discussed expectations for the future to prevent similar incidents.

A Lesson Learned

He also spoke with R, and they agreed that he will keep the books and she would pay for them at her convenience.

He believes it’s crucial for his daughter to develop responsible financial habits.
