Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis thinks the climate crisis is no more than just “a lie” designed to “politicize” weather. Let’s take a look.
Nobody Intelligent Can Deny the Impact of the Climate Crises
DeSantis gave this response when a reporter questioned him about President Joe Biden’s statement that “nobody intelligent can deny the impact of the climate crises, anymore”.
Storms Have Hit Florida in the Past
In his response, DeSantis noted that storms have hit Florida in the past and that the “notion that somehow hurricanes are something new” is “just false.”
Why Are They Trying to Politicize the Weather?
“This area, the Big Bend, got hit by a storm, almost the exact same track in 1896 that had 125 mile per hour winds. So the idea that we’ve not had powerful storms until recently, that’s just not factually true. And so when they, that’s the first thing they want to say, you have to ask, why are they trying to politicize the weather?”
“We’ve got to stop politicizing the weather and stop politicizing natural disasters,” he said. “We know from history, there have been times where it’s been very busy in Florida.”
“A Lot of Significant Hurricanes in the Past”
The Florida Governor said there were “a lot of hits of significant hurricanes” in the late 40’s, and early 50’s.
Desantis’ Comments Are the Opposite of Biden’s
DeSantis’ are in direct contrast to the comments that Biden made during his visit to Live Oak.
The president was touring the Big Bend region in Florida after it had been ravaged by Hurricane Idalia.
Widespread Damage From the Storm
The storm wreaked widespread damage and flooding on several small towns in the rural wooded area of northwest Florida before it moved toward Georgia.
More than 450,000 people in Florida and Georgia lost their power as a result.
Up to 20 Billion In Damage
The hurricane has caused between $12 and $20 billion in damage, according to the findings from Moody’s Analytics – the most destructive hurricane in 2023, so far.
Serious Damage That We’ve Never Seen Before
“Nobody can deny the impact of climate crises – at least nobody intelligent can deny the impact of climate crises anymore. Just look around the nation and the world for that matter,” Biden said.
“Historic floods, intense droughts, extreme heat, deadly wildfires that have caused serious damage that we’ve never seen before.”
Biden: Florida Has Full the Support of Federal Government
Biden talked to DeSantis ahead of his visit to Florida, promising the Florida Governor that the Sunshine State would have the “full support” of the federal government, as it continues to clear the aftermath of the natural disaster.
FEMA Didn’t Say Climate Change Caused the Storm
Deanne Criswell, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) didn’t say that the recent Florida storm was caused by climate change but noted that the agency has seen an increase in severe weather events.
DeSantis Didn’t Meet Biden in Florida
DeSantis didn’t meet Biden during his stop in Florida, raising questions from many in both political parties.
Some thought that being next to the US president on the same stage would be politically perilous for DeSantis, who stands on the opposite side of the spectrum from Biden on many issues like immigration, abortion rights and gun control, among others.
Biden Prioritizes Climate Change
Biden made climate change one of the centerpieces of his White House campaign.
He set an ambitious goal to cut U.S. emissions in half by 2030 from 2005 and implement bigger tax credits to incentivize electric vehicles to lower emissions.
Biden Is a Top Democratic Contender
Biden, who is struggling with low approval rates, is still considered the Democratic Presidential frontrunner, while DeSantis is trailing former President Donald Trump by double digitals in some states, according to recent polls.
DeSantis Trying to Give His Campaign a Fresh Boost
After briefly pausing his campaign after the deadly shooting in Jacksonville which claimed three lives, and Florida’s Hurricane Idalia, DeSantis returned to the campaign trail, as he is seeking to reinvigorate his presidential campaign.
He is working to differentiate himself from other well-known Republican candidates including former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and Former Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump Is Still a Frontrunner
As DeSantis is trying to build his case that he is the best candidate for the Republican Party, Trump has built a formidable lead thanks to his loyal following.
His strong polling has not been affected by his ongoing legal woes or the fact that he could face multiple legal trials before the end of the campaign.
