A man took to Reddit recently to vent about an encounter he’d had with an annoyingly nosy neighbor. His story is funny and a testament to sticking up for yourself.
A Problem Neighbor
He’s a photographer who is used to dealing with nightmare customers when he’s on the job.
But one day, he encountered a guy who took it to a whole new level.
Curious Kids
Last month, he got hired to shoot a house in a college town.
In this town, it’s not usual for curious children and college students to come up and ask what he was doing.
Staring in Silence
But as soon as he arrived at this house, he noticed a male neighbor and his teen son unloading a van.
The original poster (OP) assumed they would ask questions, so he snapped two quick photos of the house and the for sale sign and walked towards the side of the house closest to the neighbor, but he just stared at him.
Confronted
OP then proceeded to shoot the rear of the house and came around to the front again, where the neighbor started walking towards him.
He claimed that the owner told him to tell anyone taking pictures that it wasn’t allowed and that he was authorized to tell them to get off the property.
Under Contract
OP knew that this wasn’t true because the owner had hired him to take pictures, and the property was under contract for sale, as the ‘sold’ notice on the for sale sign indicated.
Threats and Anger
He told the neighbor this, but he immediately denied it and said that the owner would have told him about OP’s arrival in advance.
He started to get angry and said he would call the police if OP didn’t leave.
He Followed Him
So OP simply smiled and told him to do it.
At that point, OP walked up to the front door, took out his key, and went inside.
The neighbor tried to follow him inside, but OP shut and locked the door behind him. The look on his face was priceless!
Strange Behavior
As OP was shooting the interior, the neighbor followed him around outside with his phone taking videos of him working.
Every now and then, OP smiled and waved at him from inside.
Called the Police
When OP was leaving, the neighbor waited by the front door for him, still filming him. He said he had called the police and that OP should wait for them to arrive.
At that point, OP had had enough and smiled, telling the neighbor to take pictures of his license plates if he hadn’t already and that the police could call him if they had any questions.
A Furious Reaction
Then OP took a picture of him.
Here, OP remarks that he finds it amazing that people like this guy think it’s okay to take your picture but demand that you cannot do the same – he was FURIOUS.
The Police Laughed It Off
An hour later, OP received a call from a very apologetic police officer.
The officer seemed embarrassed to say why he’d called, so OP asked if it was because he’d spoken to the guy on such-and-such street.
The officer started cracking up and said yes.
Making Demands
Apparently, the neighbor had demanded that the police arrest OP, jail him, and beat him to a pulp!
The officer spent the better part of an hour trying to explain that it wasn’t illegal to take pictures and that if OP had a key to get in and hadn’t done any damage, he was probably exactly what he had said he was: a photographer.
A Formality
The officer was calling OP as a formality.
OP and the officer had a good laugh, and the officer asked if OP intended to return to the property in the future, to which OP said it depended on whether the client hired him again.
Time Waster
The neighbor had wasted some of the OP’s and the police’s time and probably raised his blood pressure quite a bit in the process!
Not Doing Anything Wrong
If the “owner” had really given his neighbor permission to chase off photographers, he should have just phoned him and confirmed what OP said.
The house was under contract for sale and had not yet been transferred to the new owner.
No Right
As a neighbor, he had no right to tell OP anything about his new neighbor’s property and should have backed off.
Because he didn’t, he embarrassed himself to OP and the police. Although, after reading about his actions, it’s doubtful that he can even feel embarrassed!
Taking Revenge
Our storyteller loves his job, and he’s ready to take revenge on any future nosy neighbors who cross his path.
He’s got his camera ready to take pictures of anyone who thinks it’s okay to hound him and take his photo without allowing him to do the same.
