This Redditor turned to the community to vent about his unsupportive family, but the Reddit community did not have his back!
Family Is Getting Bigger
The Original Poster (OP), a 32-year-old man, is expecting his second child with his 30-year-old wife (J).
She is currently 14 weeks pregnant.
The couple are thrilled about the news.
OP’s younger sister (C), a 25-year-old woman, and her 27-year-old wife (B) are also expecting their first child.
They underwent IVF, and C is now 38 weeks pregnant.
OP is very happy for them and believes they will make excellent parents.
A Family Gathering
OP recently had a family gathering with his grandparents who live out of state.
They don’t visit often, so the family always makes it a point to spend time with them together.
Looking Forward to the Future
During the gathering, OP’s grandparents expressed their excitement about seeing their daughter and her wife become mothers, eagerly anticipating their first great-granddaughter.
She Was Invisible
However, they did not acknowledge his wife’s pregnancy, causing her to feel hurt.
OP tried to start a conversation to include J, but the focus always shifted back to C and B’s baby.
OP attempted to change the conversation to their upcoming gender reveal event, but nobody seemed to show any interest.
An Upset Reaction
This upset J, causing her to leave the room. C noticed the commotion and inquired about the situation.
OP explained that J felt excluded and hurt by the focus on C’s pregnancy.
In response, B apologized and clarified that they had not intended to make anyone feel left out.
Refused to Return
Despite efforts from OP’s mother to persuade J to return to the gathering, she refused to come back.
Not a Competition
C told OP that his wife cannot expect every conversation to be about her.
She also stated that their two pregnancies aren’t a competition.
OP then told C that her baby isn’t the only baby that matters and that he and J should be getting some attention too around their pregnancy.
An Early Exit
OP’s grandmother then told him that she would be happy to discuss both pregnancies, but stated it was too late.
J wanted to leave the family gathering, so OP and J departed early.
Making a Scene
OP is now complaining that he is getting called out by his family for making a scene with the grandparents around.
He feels that no one cares enough to see his side in all this.
The Reddit community was flooded with over 2,000 comments regarding this situation, many stating that OP was wrong.
Many users commented that these two pregnancies are very different and should be treated so. C’s baby is their first and is after rounds of IVF. OP and J are now on their second pregnancy. The Reddit commenters stated that OP should let C get the attention right now because this is an exciting time for them.
One Reddit comment said, “I’m currently pregnant w/ baby #2 and folks just aren’t as excited the second time around. Folks also includes me lol.”
Another user pointed out that the excitement should be around C’s pregnancy because she is due so soon. OP and J are only 14 weeks along, so they will be in the spotlight toward the end of their pregnancy too. C and B also live out of state, so there is a possibility that the excitement of seeing them added to the occasion.
“You forgot to add that the sister lives out of state while OP and his wife don’t. The grandparents have probably already gushed at great lengths about their child as they can see them regularly, whereas they rarely get to see the sister.” another commenter wrote on Reddit.
What do you think? Should OP have said these things to his sister? Share your thoughts by leaving a comment!
