Speaking at an event in Phoenix, Arizona, Biden emphasized the need to protect the core values of American Democracy and maintain the nation’s status as a global beacon of democratic governance.
Speaking at a Memorial
Biden’s speech was delivered at an event honoring the memory of the late Senator John McCain, with whom Biden had a close bipartisan relationship.
In his speech, Biden’s message was clear: democracy is at a critical juncture, and it’s time for all Americans to consider what they can do to safeguard it.
The Dangers of a Second Trump Presidency
In this speech, Biden said that the authoritarian values promoted by Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement posed a significant threat to the United States.
An Extremist Movement
Biden also expressed his concern about the rise of an extremist movement that does not share the fundamental principles of democracy, emphasizing the importance of the moment in American history.
Basic Beliefs of MAGA
“There is something dangerous happening in America,” Biden stated, “There is an extremist movement that does not share the basic beliefs of our democracy: the Maga movement … History has brought us to a new time of testing.”
Rule of the People
Emphasizing that the country’s character and future were on the line, Biden stressed that democracy means “rule of the people, not rule of the monarchy, not rule of money, not rule of the mighty.”
A Call for Unity
Throughout his speech, Biden sought to unite Americans by stressing the importance of preserving democracy, regardless of political affiliation.
He underlined the need for free and fair elections and the importance of respecting election outcomes, whether one wins or loses.
Political Violence
Biden stated, “Democracy means rejecting and repudiating political violence, regardless of party, such violence is never, never, never acceptable in America. It’s undemocratic, and it must never be normalized to gain political power,” condemning any attempts to normalize violence as a means to gain political power.
January 6th
Though this can not be known for certain, many believe this remark clearly references the events of January 6.
The infamous day when a large group, inspired by Trump, attacked Capitol Hill in an attempt to prevent the certification of Biden’s election victory.
The Ongoing Threat
Biden did not downplay the ongoing danger to democracy. He noted that even though Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election had failed, the risk to democracy persisted.
Threatening a General
To highlight the continuing danger of political violence, Biden pointed out that recent threats of violence directed at General Mark Milley, the chair of the US Armed Forces Joint Chiefs of Staff, after Trump accused the general of “treason” on social media.
Trump’s Inciting Post
In Trump’s post, he said that Milley “turned out to be a Woke train wreck who, if the Fake News reporting is correct, was actually dealing with China to give them a heads-up on the thinking of the President of the United States.” and “This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH!”

Biden also took a moment to address Trump’s followers directly, stating, “Frankly, these MAGA extremists have no idea what the hell they’re talking about.”
The State of the Republican Party
Biden then commented on the state of the Republican Party, stating, “There is no doubt that today’s Republican party is driven and intimidated by MAGA extremists.”
An Extreme Agenda
In order to make his point on the Republican part clear, Biden concluded by stating, “Their extreme agenda, if carried out, would fundamentally alter the institutions of American democracy as we know it.”
