In the wake of the recent Israel-Hamas crisis, questions surrounding President Joe Biden’s response time have ignited a political firestorm, with critics accusing him of “sleeping on the job.” Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis accused the president of being absent during a press conference on Saturday.
Biden’s Morning Admission
During a press conference on Saturday, President Biden made a surprising revelation, stating, “When I got up this morning and started this at 7:30, 8:00, my calls…”
This admission raised eyebrows, considering that by that time, eight hours had passed since Hamas initiated its bombardment of Israel.
DeSantis Criticizes President
Among those questioning the president’s handling of the situation is Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
DeSantis characterized Biden’s response as inadequate, given the severity of the attack on Israel, the most substantial in 50 years.
A Coordinated Assault
“In a coordinated, multi-pronged assault, Palestinian terrorists crossed into Israel from the Gaza Strip, seizing settlements and capturing and murdering civilians celebrating a Jewish holiday,” DeSantis remarked.
The devastating toll on Israel, with over 300 killed and 1,590 injured, had raised concerns about the delayed response.
Sleeping on the Job
“The president needs to be there answering the call when our top ally in the Middle East is under the gun. You can’t be sleeping on the job.
You’ve got to get there, you’ve got to do it, and you’ve got to engage. We need a very clear voice, strong support for the state of Israel,” DeSantis emphasized.
Public Questions Biden’s Awareness of Attack
Online, the public further questioned whether Biden had received information about the events during the early hours of the morning.
Late-Night Attack
The Republican National Committee’s Twitter account asked, “Was that his first briefing on the attacks, which started at approx. 11:30 pm ET and continued throughout the night?”
Jill Biden’s Influence
Other social media users joined in, demanding answers as to why the president appeared unaware of the attack until daylight hours.
One user quipped, “I’m sure Jill has told everyone to not disturb Joe after his bedtime.” Another added, “I was up all night keeping up on the facts. I have no government office.”
Speculation Surrounding Presidential Bedtime
While a lot of comments on social media were in jest, they underscored the public’s concern about the timing of his response.
A White House Tactic?
However, the White House has previously used the issue of Biden sleeping in as a tactic to emphasize the importance Biden is placing on an event.
Biden’s Unique Work Schedule
Earlier this year, former White House press secretary Jennifer Psaki revealed that Biden typically does very little before 9 a.m.
Night Owl President
During the Silicon Valley Bank collapse in March, Psaki explained, “It’s important to note, President Biden does nothing at 9:00 a.m. He is a night owl.
So the fact that he is doing this at 9:00 am speaks to how vital the White House recognizes it is for him to have his voice out there.”
Consulting World Leaders
Despite the controversy surrounding the timing of his response, President Biden and his top aides spent Saturday consulting with European and Middle East leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Condemnation of Attacks
During a White House briefing, Biden condemned the attacks as “unconscionable” and pledged support for Israel’s defense.

“Let me say this as clearly as I can: This is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage,” President Biden stated, reinforcing the United States’ commitment to its long-standing ally in the region.
