A recent development at Princeton University has ignited debates about racism, as a class curriculum scheduled for the upcoming fall semester suggests that Black people can be perceived as “disabled” due to the impact of systemic racism. Here’s the whole story.
A Controversial Book

The course taught by Professor Satyel Larson, who specializes in women, gender, and sexuality studies, has raised eyebrows for its incorporation of a book titled “Permission to Maim.”
Systemic Racism

Authored by Jasbir Puar, the book posits that systemic racism can potentially render Black individuals and other marginalized groups “disabled” due to the structural constraints that limit their activity within society.
Disability Justice Movement

Puar contends that these movements, including Black Lives Matter and the struggle for Palestinian rights, constitute a broader disability justice movement, as they challenge conditions of instability that weaken various populations.
The Central Premise of the Book

“These movements may not represent the most appealing or desired versions of disability pride.
But they are movements anchored, in fact, in the lived experiences of debilitation, implicitly contesting the right to maim, and imagining multiple futures where bodily capacities and debilities are embraced rather than weaponized,” the book said.
Questions Were Raised

This innovative approach has generated significant discussion, raising questions about the parallels between different social justice movements and the role of disability justice within them.
“Decolonizing” Students’ Thought Processes

The course, designed to “decolonize” students’ thought processes, focuses on critical race theory and intertwines it with capitalism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination.
Re-Orienting Healing

“Re-orienting healing as a decolonizing process enables students to re-politicize personal trauma as it intersects with global legacies of violence, war, racism, slavery, patriarchy, colonialism, orientalism, homophobia, ableism, capitalism, and extractives,” the course description said.
Critics’ Argument

Unsurprisingly, the course has not been without controversy.
Critics argue that framing systemic racism as a form of disability oversimplifies the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and undermines the distinctive advocacy efforts within the disability rights movement.
There Was Support

Others view integrating critical race theory within the curriculum as a way to establish divisive ideologies further and stifle open discourse.
“It’s Horribly Racist”

Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “Yikes. Black people are handicapped and therefore unable to do well in life because of it. Is this really the point you want to make? Because that’s horribly racist.”
The Course Should Change

Another User wrote, “So, a school that teaches a class against capitalism instead of teaching them how to invest within capitalism is saying a certain group of people should be considered handicapped?”
