A recent study conducted by the think tank Data for Progress revealed the prevailing sentiment among American voters regarding the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals. Here’s the whole story.
The Study
The research revealed that nearly half of all voters believe that the political climate in the United States has taken a hostile turn towards the LGBTQ+ community.
This alarming statistic coincides with a surge in legislative efforts targeting the LGBTQ+ community, especially Trans people.
The Restrictions
The efforts manifest in various forms, from book bans and censorship of school curriculum to limited access to vital healthcare services and stringent eligibility criteria for Trans individuals in sports.
Majority Support Laws to Protect the LGBTQ+
The study further stated that 57% of US voters advocate for the implementation of additional laws to protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination.
The Respondents
This percentage, when dissected, represents 91% of LGBTQ+ respondents and a noteworthy 53% of straight and cisgender respondents.
Democrats Favor the Most
Also, support for increased LGBTQ+ protections resonated more strongly within the Democratic voter base, with 82% in favor, compared to 32% among Republicans.
The Disconcerting Truth
The research also revealed that only one in three voters personally know a transgender individual, with 35% of Democrats and 23% of Republicans reporting such familiarity.
Furthermore, 21% of voters personally know someone who identifies as nonbinary, comprising 27% of Democrats and just 12% of Republicans.
Personal Connections Within the LGBTQ+ Community
Danielle Deiseroth of Data for Progress shared that those with personal connections within the LGBTQ+ community exhibit markedly higher levels of support for pro-LGBTQ+ policies, transcending political affiliations.
Protects Transgender Americans
Deiseroth said, “Those who know a transgender person are more likely to support legislation that protects transgender Americans and expands their rights.”
Right-Wing Politicians Continue to Target the Trans Community
She added, “As right-wing politicians continue to target the transgender community, this pattern underscores the importance of elevating trans voices and increasing transgender representation across the media.”
The New Statistics
Another recent survey conducted by SurveyMonkey indicated that 58% of Republicans felt that politicians were focusing excessively on transgender issues.
This sentiment was supported by 49% of independents and 32% of Democrats.
Enforcement of Anti-lgbtq+ Policies
Another study by Navigator revealed that over half of Americans expressed deep concern over the enforcement of anti-LGBTQ+ policies in educational institutions.
The Surprising Discovery
Surprisingly, the majority of voters were more inclined to prioritize issues such as mental health, educational quality, and gun violence over the inclusion of gender identity in the curriculum.
Perceived Wokeness
A Fox News poll earlier this year reaffirmed that a substantial majority of US voters believed that Trans children were unjustly targeted by political attacks, with around one percent expressing concerns about perceived “wokeness.”

Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “No we’re not; we are for protecting children from being mutilated. There are already enough laws protecting others and there’s no need for special protections.”
