On an otherwise ordinary Christmas Eve at an In-N-Out Burger in California, a distressing incident unfolded that would eventually prompt a nationwide discussion on hate crimes.
It Was an Ordinary Day, Until…
Jordan Douglas Krah, a resident of Denver, Colorado, was apprehended by the San Ramon Police in California on two counts of committing a hate crime following a disturbing incident that took place on Christmas Eve at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant.
Barrage of Homophobic and Racist Slurs
The incident unfolded as two Asian-American customers, Arine Kim and Elliot Ha, innocently filmed a TikTok video inside the establishment when they were subjected to a barrage of homophobic and racist slurs by an unidentified man.
Mocked for Filming Themselves
In the video, shared last year, the perpetrator approached Kim and Ha, initially mocking them for filming themselves eating and labeling them “weird homosexuals.”
Racist Comments and Aggressive Homophobia
As the incident continued, the man escalated his offensive behavior by targeting Ha’s ethnicity, making derogatory comments associating him with Kim Jong Un, and engaging in aggressive questioning about his sexual orientation.
He Didn’t Want to Engage and Provoke More Hate
Kim, recognizing the escalating hostility, urged Ha to disengage and refrain from reacting to the man’s provocations.
He Returned With Threats
But the situation took a more alarming turn when the man returned, hurling further homophobic comments and making explicit threats.
Specific Derogatory Slurs
He even made a derogatory remark about Filipinos, heightening the distressing nature of the encounter.
They Feared for Their Safety
Fearing for their safety, Kim expressed concerns about the possibility of violence, asking if he could even produce a firearm.
He Got Busted
Kim shared the video on TikTok, seeking support and drawing attention to the shocking hate speech they had endured.
The post quickly gained traction, capturing the interest of Chief Denton Carlson from the San Ramon Police Department, who reached out to Kim via Twitter.
An Arrest Was Made
Responding to their concerns, the police swiftly apprehended the suspect, later identified as Jordan Douglas Krah.
Loitering to Cause Fear
In an update video on TikTok, Kim revealed that Krah had loitered outside the restaurant for approximately 10 minutes, menacingly glaring at them through the window.
Fearful of further harassment, Kim and Ha remained in their seats, refraining from any action that could escalate the situation.
He Was a Menace to the Entire Community
Kim further disclosed that a Filipino family had contacted her via Instagram, sharing a similar encounter with Krah in a neighboring area, where he had allegedly spat at them and directed racist comments.
He Wasn’t Physically Hurt
Initially reluctant to involve law enforcement due to the absence of physical harm, Kim explained that she and Ha did not anticipate their experiences would be taken seriously.
Supported and Impressed With Police Response
But, the overwhelming support garnered on TikTok and the responsive actions of the police have bolstered their confidence.
Doing Good on the Platform
Kim expressed gratitude for the platform that allowed her to shed light on hate crimes and the daily atrocities endured by minority communities.
Urgent Need to Protect the Community
The incident underscores the urgent need to address hate crimes and discrimination against the Asian-American community.
Rising Rates of Asian Americans Being Victims of Hate Crime
According to a report by Stop AAPI Hate, more than 10,000 hate incidents were reported by Asian Americans in 2020 and 2021, with nearly half occurring in public spaces.
We Need a More Tolerant Society
Kim hopes sharing her ordeal will inspire others to speak out about their own experiences, fostering a greater understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities daily.
