Reckless: What Happens In Vegas Stays In Vegas…Doesn’t It? Not This Time…Listen to This!

Mister Quitter no longer wanted to work-from-home but instead of finding an in-office job locally, he has the hair-brained plan and opportunity that they should move to Las Vegas. His wife has other ideas!

Long Term Partners

The Original Poster (OP), aged 39, and her husband, aged 38, have been married for 12 years, and they’ve been together for a total of 15 years.

Recently, OP’s husband left his Manhattan-based job because it was too “work-from-home-oriented,” and the employer had not given him any assurances that he would be allowed to return to the office.

Moral High Ground Led to Unemployment

Her husband claimed that working remotely didn’t suit him. Although he didn’t say it out loud, he was simply upholding his moral standards. He has been trying to find a job since but hasn’t succeeded.

However, he informed OP that he needed to travel to Las Vegas for an interview, so last month, OP assisted him in finding low-cost flights and getting ready.

He went and reported that everything went smoothly, but he didn’t hear back from them.

However, things took a turn when suddenly, the husband said that he had been hired by the casino.

OP had anticipated that he would be hired for the New Brunswick job for which he had applied and required driving a Chevy Express van.

OP has been a social worker for the past nine years, and she has worked with persons who have autism spectrum disorder for the previous 16 years. Before that, she was a server in a Mexican restaurant.

Why Should She Give Up Her Happiness?

While she is happy that her husband has found work, OP is worried about the implications of the move.

Her job requires in-person contact, and she could not work during the pandemic when many people suggested working from home. She loves her job, and being her own boss is hard but rewarding.

Moving Would Mean Serious Demotion

She wants to continue working in her field and not take up a job in a fast food joint or any other work.

She Won’t Fit in!

Moving to Las Vegas would mean she would need to get licensed there, and that may take some time.

Moreover, she worries about how culturally different Las Vegas is from New Jersey and how she and her husband may fit in with the locals.

Her Job Can’t Easily Transfer

OP has spoken to her husband about the realities of life in Las Vegas and how hard it will be for her to find work. She wants to have a “big talk” to discuss the implications of the move fully.

Should She Go?

OP took to Reddit to ask whether she was in the wrong for not wanting to move to Las Vegas and support her husband.

Why Was it Even an Option?!

Many Redditors sided with OP and said that she was not wrong.

One Reddit user asked why OP agreed to the potential interview, and OP should have mentioned that she didn’t like moving earlier.

Stop Being Reckless and Communicate

Another Redditor wrote, “Both your points are valid. You like your job and don’t want to leave. Your husband didn’t want to WFH and looked for another position. The thing is, you seem both a bit reckless.

Your husband quit his job without having another one already. Then you help him interview in Vegas but don’t want to leave. You need a big discussion about what you both want and where you plan to be in 5 years or something like that.”

Reasonable Reservations

OP’s situation is one that many people face when relocating for work. While her husband has found work in Las Vegas, OP is rightly concerned about her job prospects and how she will fit in culturally.
