The University of Arizona’s nursing school has found itself at the center of a heated debate, as slides from a lesson plan designed to instruct doctoral students on discussing gender identity with pediatric patients went viral. Here’s the full story.
The Lesson

The lesson plan, which was shared on social media, includes slides aimed at guiding healthcare professionals on how to approach conversations about gender identity with pediatric patients.
The Slide

One of the slides in question, labeled “What to ask – Ages 3 to 13,” reads, “Some kids feel like a girl on the inside, some kids feel like a boy on the inside, and some kids feel like neither, both, or someone else. What about you? How do you feel on the inside? There’s no right or wrong answer.”
It Went Viral

The controversy gained momentum when right-wing profiles of TikTok shared the slides, garnering over 2.2 million views.
Absolutely Sickened

Arizona State Senator Janae Shamp, a Republican, expressed her shock, saying, “I’m absolutely sickened that this institution of higher learning is perpetuating the lie that a person’s gender is based on feelings and not their God-given biological sex established upon conception.”
Disheartened as a Nurse

“As a nurse, I am so disheartened that the next generations of nurses are being hijacked of their capabilities to deliver ethical care,” she said.
Extremist Agenda

Senator Ken Bennett, another Republican, characterized the content as part of an “extremist agenda” targeting minors in a “predatory fashion.”
Using State Funding

He said, “I’m looking forward to seeing what action [UArizona] President Robbins takes to ensure that this immoral curriculum being taught, with the use of state funding, never reaches another classroom again.”
Tax Dollars Needs to Be Checked

State Senator T.J. Shope, also a Republican, echoed these sentiments saying, “Senate Republicans will weigh all options to make certain tax dollars are no longer used in such an egregious fashion.”
The University Responded

The controversy prompted a response from the University of Arizona, as spokesperson Pam Scott directed attention to a statement published on Friday.
The university clarified that it does not have an official policy or position on this issue and does not integrate such training or education into its curriculum.
The College Works With Permission

The statement said, “The college teaches that practitioners should always work with the parents and guardians and with their permission, within their scope of the practice, and in alignment with the employing organization’s guidance when treating pediatric patients.”
They Were Practicing Nurses

The university also explained that the lesson was provided to 31 doctoral students who were already practicing nurses.
“The sessions are designed to give students the opportunity to engage with professionals on a wide variety of topics they may encounter in the field,” the statement read.
Twitter Users Expressed Their Views

Several social media users shared their views on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “Of course they did. They hate education. And they hate science. They hate their fellow Americans. Nothing to see here.”
This Is Dumb

Another user added, “This is so dumb. How does anyone know how it feels to be a girl or a boy? Maybe they don’t feel anything either way.”
Children Are Not Toys

A third user wrote, “Are they telling parents that their children are toys that can be constructed at will? Seems unreasonable to even have children, get pets instead.”
Basic Logic Is Lost on the Left

A fourth user commented, “If the organs don’t determine it, how does changing them affirm it?! The basic logic is lost on the left!!”
