We have all worked with a nitpicker but this one might just be the worst. Here’s proof that being a workaholic doesn’t make you relevant in the corporate world.
Inside the Corporate Landscape

Our original poster (OP) worked for a large company with many departments and a reputation for following core values and dealing with major issues well, except for one micromanaging boss, whom he refers to as Gina.
Workaholic Boss

Gina was a workaholic who expected her hourly workers to do a lot but never outside of their normal shift.
Unpaid Overtime to Get The Job Done

One day, Gina tasked OP with creating a monthly report to hand up the chain to a big deal named Matt. The report was intensive and very in-depth, so it took a lot of unpaid overtime for him to learn and get it done.
She Was Impatient and Unimpressed

Gina didn’t appreciate it and questioned why it was taking so long, as “learning something out of my scope” was not appropriate.
Their Direct Communication Was Denied

OP and Matt developed a great working relationship, and Gina found out that Matt was asking OP questions about his sites. For some reason, Gina didn’t take too kindly to this and informed him that any and all communication from himself to Matt must go through her, including the report.
Asking the Hard Stuff

This upset OP, but he found a way to work around it.
He told Matt that Gina knew very little about the report, especially the most important part and two specific questions would likely have her forward those questions to him to answer.
He Set Her Up

So, of course, Matt brought up those two specific questions, but not by email. Instead, on a big call of bigwigs just as OP happened to step out of the office and was unable to field quick questions from Gina over the computer!
Consequences for Gina and the Team

The feedback was nothing but a roasting for Gina as she had initially said the report was hers, so the higher-ups took the report away from Gina and OP altogether.
Malicious Micro Management

This upset Gina even more, so she hammered back at OP and asked him to begin logging EVERYTHING he did every day, including time for filling out the log. Due to other factors in the job, HR was already looped in on everything that was going on between Gina and OP, so this was as well.
Minute by Minute Log

A long story short, this log was filled out to the minute, after every task, phone call, or anything OP did, including time for filling out the log.
No Detail Too Small

The amount of detail OP put in for this log allowed him to actually spend 2-3 minutes filling it out for even the smallest task of a passerby at his office door asking him a quick yes/no question.
Valuable Time Was Wasted

OP loved it, but unfortunately, it didn’t allow him to complete all his normal tasks daily, and by the end of the first week, he had quite a pile of additional work.
HR Intervention

OP, Gina, and HR got on a call to discuss all of this after the week, and HR sided with OP and told Gina to either push work off him to someone else or get rid of this log that showed he was skipping breaks.
Overtime

These weekly calls also got OP a separate payment for an estimated but realistic amount of unpaid overtime due to his workload.
Despite HR making his life a lot easier, Gina did not. So, OP made the decision to switch departments entirely with zero carryovers.
Streamlining Meant She Was No Longer Useful

Within two months of his switch, the entire department got functionalized with a few other departments due to “creating a better balance of work to the employee,” changing the job scope of all his former colleagues entirely, and coincidentally rendering Gina’s job useless.
The high-ups pushed her to a “special projects” role for a year, where the special projects then magically ended, and she got let go.
A Good Result

OP’s new manager likes to send emails out with the names of people who had recently got promoted, and she was able to see two of those with OP’s name on them, the second just days before her final one. He couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out.
Don’t Bite The Hand That Feeds You

This story is a classic example of “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.” Gina’s micromanaging and reluctance to allow her employees’ unpaid overtime ended up costing her department dearly.
She only made matters worse by insisting on being the gatekeeper of communication with Matt and tasking OP with logging everything he did.
There Are Advantages to Doing the Right Thing

It also shows how to play the game of corporate politics to your advantage. It’s not about being sneaky or dishonest; it’s about using the rules to your benefit and making the most of the opportunities presented to you.
OP did just that, and he came out on top.
Special Projects Come With Career-Ending Time Stamps

Reddit users loved his tale.
One user said, “Oh gosh, the ‘special projects’ kiss of death where everyone knows there’s some adverse action being taken against an employee, but we all just agree that they would do great in ‘special projects’ (until that project inevitably ends).”
