A thirteen-year-old’s involvement in a recent crime spree in San Francisco has drawn attention to the city’s ongoing issues. As the city grapples with crime and its “doom loop” reputation, a group of billionaires has launched a $4 million campaign to reshape its image.
Crime in the City

San Francisco Police Officers Association posted a lighthearted comment about the teenager arrested after stealing a car and leading police on a chase.
The Baby Bipper

The Police Officers Association called her a “Baby Bipper” – a local term for car thieves- after the young suspect crashed the stolen vehicle into two others near the Bay Bridge on-ramp.
The ‘It Starts Here’ Campaign

Meanwhile, San Francisco Mayor London Breed attended a mural project launching the “It Starts Here” ad campaign, funded by a group of billionaires, including Ripple CEO Chris Larsen.
The Doom Loop

The campaign aims to combat the city’s negative reputation as an expensive and unsafe place stuck in a “Doom Loop,” a term for a city stuck in a constant cycle of increasing decay.
Reshaping an Image

The TV ads showcase the city’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge and highlight its contributions to cultural history, including the Summer of Love and its role as the birthplace of tech giants like Apple, Google, and Uber.
The Best is Yet to Come

The message is clear in the campaign: “If it changes everything in an instant. Well, then, chances are, it was dreamt up and built up here in San Francisco. And the best is yet to come.” The campaign seeks to emphasize the positive aspects of the city.
Challenges Faced by Residents

However, longtime San Francisco resident Ricci Lee Wynne has a different perspective. According to Wynne, despite the glossy campaign ads, visitors and business owners may experience a stark contrast when they arrive in the city.
Troubling Behavior

Wynne has documented numerous instances of public drug use, criminal behavior, and homelessness near his South of Market (SoMa) District residence.
Drugs Everywhere

Wynne’s concerns include the prevalence of drug dealers selling substances like fentanyl and heroin near his home and a 24/7 open-air drug market near the Nancy Pelosi federal building.
Poverty Porn

Wynne says, “People are watching these nice ads, but when they get here, what they see is essentially what they call ‘poverty porn’”
Addressing Safety Concerns

Safety concerns are not limited to residents and businesses. City workers from the Public Works Department have been issued bulletproof vests to protect themselves from attacks.
Attacked While Working

While handing out citations to vendors operating without proper licenses, some workers have been physically assaulted, received threats, and faced verbal abuse while performing their duties.
A Difficult Job

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott acknowledges the challenges these workers face, stating, “They have been subject to attacks, verbal and physical assaults, so it really makes it difficult to do their jobs.”
