Anna is facing a tough decision after her husband’s less fortunate cousin seeks a vacation stay with them, sparking a conversation about family obligations and boundaries.
She’s Had a Challenging Year
Anna, a 41-year-old woman, and her husband have faced a challenging year marked by job changes and their 14-year-old daughter’s mental health struggles.
Her Family Has Several Ongoing Commitments
In addition to their challenges, they also have to focus on their 12-year-old son’s commitment to playing baseball on a travel team.
The Cost of Living Is High
Not to mention, living in a bustling city with a high cost of living, Anna and her husband are already stretched thin.
The Unexpected Request
Things took a turn recently when a request from her husband’s aunt added more pressure to Anna’s already burdened shoulders.
Her Cousin’s Family Is Coming Over
Anna recently found out by way of her mother-in-law that her cousin and her three kids were planning to stay with them for three days.
The Aunt Would Pick Them Up Later
Following their stay with Anna, their aunt would then pick them up to spend a couple of weeks at her place.
The Cousin Was Coming for a Vacation
The purpose of the visit was to provide the cousin with a much-needed vacation while Anna and her husband took care of the children and acted as tourist guides.
She Was Furious
Anna felt a surge of anger and frustration upon hearing this news.
They Didn’t Have the Time to Play Host
The proposed three days were weekdays when both she and her husband had work commitments.
On top of that, their daughter had therapy sessions, and their son had a baseball game in a city an hour away.
It Was Not Possible
With such a hectic schedule, hosting the cousin and her kids was simply not possible.
She Was Criticized
When Anna and her husband expressed their concerns, they were met with criticism from his family, who deemed them unreasonable.
She Offered a Solution
Despite their objections, Anna tried to find a solution by arranging for the cousin and her kids to stay at her mother’s condo, located about 10 minutes away from their place.
They Didn’t Respond Well
This decision, however, triggered another round of negative reactions from her husband’s family, who felt that the cousin was being unwelcome.
She Tried to Call Her Cousin
Anna and her husband made multiple attempts to reach out to the cousin directly, but she remained unresponsive, leaving them with little choice but to deal with the aunt’s persuasion.
Her Husband’s Family Was Adamant
Despite their reluctance, Anna’s husband’s family believed that they should help the less fortunate cousin and provide her with a much-needed vacation, given her financial constraints and the opportunity to stay in the city.
It Was an Over-The-Top Request!
As a result, she took to Reddit to ask whether she was in the wrong for her decision. More than two hundred comments poured in, saying that she was not wrong.
Why Doesn’t She Ask Herself?
One Reddit user wrote, “If the cousin won’t even take your calls, she is not someone you want in your home.”
Just Mirror the Way They Treat You
Another Redditor commented, “Unreasonably demanding families can be dealt with in the same manner they do so with you. Nothing here says anything other than you did the right thing.”
