Anna was at work when her mother called. It was unusual because she usually only ever calls in an emergency.

She asked if her cousin’s son from Eastern Europe could stay with her from Friday through Tuesday. The most annoying part was that it was a last-minute request, with less than 24 hours’ notice.

She Was Already Hosting a Friend
Anna was mad because she had already made plans for the weekend. And she already had a friend staying over and a roommate who was openly gay.
Conservative Family
Her family tends to be conservative and homophobic in nature, and she was worried it could potentially create a tense atmosphere.
Anna Declined
Considering all this, Anna told her mother she couldn’t host the young cousin.
She Asked Whether Her Friends Could Help
Then she asked if Anna could ask her friends to let him stay with them as he is too young to rent a hotel. She also asked if Anna could find the time to look after him.
She Doesn’t Know Him
Anna claimed that she had never met him before, his father, or anybody else from his family and that she didn’t even know his name.
She Said to Look for a Hotel or Airbnb
When Anna suggested alternatives such as Airbnb or youth hotels, her mother dismissed the idea and accused her of being rude and unhelpful. She told her she hadn’t raised her to be so harsh.
She Was Disappointed With Her
She hung up the phone and appeared to be quite disappointed with her.
It’s Rude to Expect Something Without Asking First
Anna felt bad about what happened and asked Redditors whether she was in the wrong for not playing the host. Several Redditors sided with, Anna saying that she was not wrong.

One Reddit user wrote, “She’s being ridiculous and it’s rude to volunteer someone else’s time and home without even asking first.”

Another Reddit user commented, “You shouldn’t be expected to accommodate this for several reasons, but especially because you are already hosting and it would be incredibly inappropriate for you to ask your guest to share the space with a stranger. Honestly, that suggestion is bizarre to me. Shrug – your family/cousin’s child did inadequate planning.”
