A Reddit user asked the community if they were in the wrong for scolding their nephew during a birthday party, causing the child to cry.
The Original Poster (OP) has a sister who is 29 years old, she has an eight-year-old son named Eric.
Due to living away, OP does not visit them frequently, but usually sees them, along with the rest of the family, during birthdays and holidays.
Spoiling Her Nephew
During visits, OP likes to buy Eric toys or candy as he is their only nephew.
OP enjoys spoiling him and feels that she may be partly to blame for what happened.
A Birthday Gift
Eric’s birthday occurred during the week, and OP paid them a visit and brought a large, toy car that had various features like lights.
When arriving at the party, OP wished Eric a happy birthday and presented him with the gift.
After opening the present, Eric expressed that it was the best one he had received so far.
At that moment, OP assumed Eric was just thrilled about the present, but in light of what happened later, OP suspects that there may have been a more sinister motive behind Eric’s comment.
About an hour into the party when all the guests had arrived, Eric made an announcement to the table where the adults were sitting.
He declared that OP had won his love and was now the person he loved the most due to the gift they had given him, which he liked the most.
Initially, OP thought it was sweet that Eric enjoyed the present.
However, Eric then proceeded to tell his mom that her gift, a board game, was terrible and that he no longer loved her.
Eric also informed one of his friends that they would not be invited to next year’s party due to their poor gift, a set of dinosaur figures.
Laughed It Off
OP believes that Eric’s behavior of ranking the gifts people gave him was unacceptable.
Despite this, OP’s sister and her husband did not address the issue and simply laughed it off.
OP decided to speak to Eric about his behavior and explained that he should be grateful for any gift he receives and not make negative comments about them.
Eric responded by questioning why he should love people who do not give him nice gifts.
OP was shocked and disappointed that her sister may be teaching such values to her son.
Eric’s father even reinforced this idea by suggesting that people should give Eric only the best gifts.
OP confronted Eric again, reiterating that a person’s worth is not determined by the value or size of the gift they give.
OP then warned Eric that if he continued to think that way, OP would no longer purchase gifts for him.
Sister Turns On Her
Eric began to cry, which resulted in OP’s sister scolding her for making Eric upset.
However, many family members, including some of the in-laws, supported OP and condemned the lesson that Eric was being taught.
An Early Exit
OP’s mother was also distressed by the situation and wanted to leave the party, so they left early.
An Accusing Text
Later, OP’s sister sent them a message accusing her of being rude for leaving before blowing out the candles and for threatening a child with empty promises.
No Empty Threat
OP countered that the promise was not empty and that she would not continue to buy gifts for Eric until he learned some manners.
Was She in the Wrong?
OP wondered if she had made a mistake by discussing the issue in front of her young nephew.
She also questioned if it was unreasonable to hold a child accountable for their behavior.
Additionally, OP was uncertain if she would be wrong in keeping her promise to not purchase a gift for Eric during their next meeting.
What Readers Said
Reddit users were generally in agreement that OP is not the one at fault in this situation and that Eric’s behavior was unacceptable. They believe that it is important to teach children about manners and values, and not to teach them that love is conditional on receiving expensive gifts. Some users even suggest taking back the gift or giving a card with a small amount of money for future occasions.
However, there is some disagreement among users about whether OP should have discussed the issue in front of Eric or left the party early. Some users believe that it was necessary to confront Eric’s behavior, while others suggest that it may have been better to wait and address the issue later. Nonetheless, users generally agree that Eric’s behavior was hurtful and needs to be corrected.
