Giuseppe Giuliano, a 29-year-old woman from Naples, Italy, commutes an astonishing 1,000 miles for work due to the unaffordability of rent prices in the city. Here’s the full story.
A Gruelling Commute
Giuliano’s daily routine is a testament to her unwavering commitment and resilience. Every morning, Giuliano wakes up at dawn, setting out on a nine-hour high-speed train journey from Naples to Milan to reach her workplace at Boccioni High School.
Despite the grueling nature of her daily commute, Giuliano does it to support herself financially.
She starts her workday at 10:30 in the morning, departs the school around 5:00 p.m., buys dinner, and at 6:20 p.m., boards the train headed back to Naples.
She gets home at 11:30 p.m. and can only spend a short amount of time with her family since she has to travel 1,000 miles (500 to and 500 back) to work the next day.
With a monthly salary of just £1,021, she simply cannot afford to rent a property in Milan for less than £525. As a result, she continues to reside at her parent’s home in Naples and embarks on the arduous journey each day.
Giuliano’s decision to undertake this mammoth journey is rooted in her financial realities.
The expenses associated with living in Milan, including rent, utility bills, and other costs, would have depleted her entire salary, necessitating financial assistance from her family.
Controversy and Skepticism
By opting for the daily commute, she manages to save around €200 per month.
Utilizing loyalty points and discount codes, she keeps the cost of the trip to approximately €400 per month.
While Giuliano’s story has gained significant attention, it has not been free from controversy and skepticism.
Some outlets have questioned her choices, suggesting that she could have found cheaper accommodation outside the city center. Plus, there are doubts surrounding the feasibility of her affordable travel arrangements from Naples to Milan.
Assistance From Employer
However, despite these concerns, one staff member at Boccioni High School has confirmed the authenticity of Giuliano’s situation and assured that the school is actively assisting her in finding nearby accommodation.
