A young college athlete was berated by a doctor who claimed he “just wanted narcotics,” when he was actually suffering from an anxiety attack. Here’s the whole story.
Anxiety Attack at Basketball Practice
A 20-year-old college athlete, Samuel Bardwell, was rushed to the emergency room after he had a “severe anxiety attack” at basketball practice one day.
First Practice of the Season
Bardwell was at his first basketball class at West Valley College when his coach said, “It looked like he was having a pretty severe anxiety attack.”
The Coach Called 911
The basketball coach, Scott Eitelgeorge, called 911 after Bardwell collapsed on the grass outside the weight room.
He Waited Three Hours to See a Doctor
The 20-year-old basketball player said he had to wait “three hours” before a doctor saw him. The doctor who came in to see Bardwell was Dr. Beth Keegstra, a contract doctor at El Camino Hospital near San Jose, California.
His Father Recorded the Confrontation
Bardwell’s father was with him at the emergency room. He didn’t like how Keegstra treated his son, so he began recording her on cell phone video.
The “Least Sick” Patient
In the video that has now gone viral, Keegstra can be seen telling Bardwell, “I’m sorry, sir, you are the least sick of all the people who are here dying.”
Are You Dead?
Keegstra started laughing and mocking Bardwell after he told her he couldn’t breathe. Keegstra laughed while saying, “He can’t inhale. Wow! You must be dead. Are you dead, sir?”
Looking for Narcotics
Keegstra thought the young man was faking his panic attack and just looking for drugs. She asked Bardwell, “So you need narcotics? Is that what you need?”
He Was in Pain
Bardwell replied to the doctor by saying, “Did I say I need narcotics? I just need a pain reliever and anxiety medication because I’m in pain, and I have anxiety.” Bardwell told the doctor, “I said nothing about narcotics.”
The Doctor “Yanked” His Arm
The confrontation between the young man and the doctor became physical when the doctor began pulling on Bardwell’s arm while trying to force him to sit up.
In the video, Bardwell was heard saying, “She is literally yanking my arm.”
Agonizing Pain
In an interview with Inside Edition, Bardwell said he “tried with all [his] might, but he “couldn’t move” because he was in “agonizing pain.” After “yanking” on Bardwell’s arm, Keegstra started cursing at him.
Get Him Out of Here
While she’s walking out of the room, Keegstra instructs someone to “Put an IV in him, give him a liter of fluid, and get him out of here.”
Sarcastic Doctor
After she’s out of the room, Keegstra can be heard on the video sarcastically saying, “He’s obviously a doctor, and he knows what he needs.”
Critics Were Outraged
Critics on social media were outraged after watching the viral video recorded by Bardwell’s father. One person commented, saying, “I hope she’s never around another patient ever.”
“Disgusting”
Several people called Dr. Keegstra “disgusting” and said to “take away her license.” One person said that Keegstra had the “worst bedside manner.”
On Medication for Anxiety Attacks
According to Bardwell’s father, his son takes the medication Klonopin for his “anxiety attacks.” Bardwell hadn’t taken his medication for two days when he suffered a panic attack at basketball practice.
He Missed Two Doses
Bardwell’s father said that his son “couldn’t get to the pharmacy before it closed,” causing him to miss two doses.
Thorough Investigation
The Hospital where Bardwell was berated released a statement, saying, “We are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.”
Doctor Removed From the Schedule
The hospital also confirmed that the contract doctor was “removed from the schedule at all the hospitals she works at.”
