Joining the ranks of those courageous individuals, model and actress Mary Katherine recently came forward with her own heartbreaking birth trauma story, which she shared in a powerful TikTok video.
Birth Trauma
Last year Mary Katherine, a Florida native, recounted the terrifying ordeal she endured while being 35 weeks pregnant.
Excruciating Pain
Experiencing excruciating pain, she was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
Her Nurses Were Cruel
What she encountered there was far from the compassionate care she deserved.
She Was Screaming in Pain and Told to Shut Up
In her TikTok video, she tearfully described how, when asked to describe her pain by a nurse, her cries and screams were allegedly met with dismissiveness, as the nurse told her to “shut up” because she was busy typing.
Faking for Drugs
Adding insult to injury, Mary Katherine claimed the nurse then insisted she leave the room, suggesting she was exaggerating her pain to obtain drugs.
Drug Screening Instead of Help
Despite vehemently denying any history of drug use, the nurse decided to order a drug screen, rather than immediately inform the doctor about Mary Katherine’s excruciating condition.
Emergency C-Section
The distressing sequence of events continued to unfold. According to Mary Katherine’s TikTok video, the doctor eventually arrived and urgently recommended a C-section to save the baby due to significant deceleration of the baby’s heart rate.
They Wouldn’t Prioritize Her or the Baby
Instead of prioritizing her well-being, the nurse, after seeing the negative drug screen results, allegedly demanded Mary Katherine admit to using drugs so that they could “help” the baby.
She’s Never Used Drugs!
She denied ever using drugs in her life, and urged the medical staff to help her because she was in terrible pain.
A Near-Death Experience
As Mary Katherine was brought into the operating room, she endured further suffering.
The administration of anesthesia took an alarmingly long time, and within minutes of lying down, she lost consciousness, experiencing a grand mal seizure.
Two Medical Emergencies
It was determined that her blood pressure had skyrocketed to dangerously high levels (220 over 180), and she was diagnosed with eclampsia.
Not only this, but the baby’s placenta had detached, and her “uterus had ruptured from top to bottom”, she says.
“Laying Dead in a Puddle of Blood”
Her baby was “laying dead in a puddle of blood” in her abdomen, and it took them 17 minutes to resuscitate the baby.
Her Heart Stopped
Then Mary Katherine also lost her heart rate, and it took them 16 minutes to resuscitate her.
Baby Was Airlifted
The baby was then swiftly airlifted to another hospital for specialized care, as detailed in her TikTok video.
The Horrors Didn’t End There
Upon arriving at the hospital to see her child, Mary Katherine claims a social worker confronted her.
Horrible Accusations
Shockingly, the hospital had allegedly spread false information, accusing her of drug use and even falsely claiming she was HIV positive.
She Took Them to Court and Won
In a subsequent TikTok video, Mary Katherine shared that she took legal action and successfully won two lawsuits against the hospital.
The Nurse Was Fired
While the nurse involved lost her job within a few weeks after Mary Katherine’s childbirth, it is important to note that her termination was unrelated to the lawsuit.
Rather, the nurse was reportedly fired due to a formal complaint filed by the doctor, citing gross negligence.
Racism Continues to Be a Problem
Mary Katherine’s courageous decision to share her traumatic birth experience not only raises awareness of medical bias and racism, but also underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure equitable and compassionate care for all expectant mothers.
