This tale of a sisterly quarrel comes from Reddit, a mother asked the community if she crossed a line when she told her sister that she was too big and lazy to look after her daughter!
A Well-Behaved Child
The Original Poster (OP) has a daughter named Rebecca, who is five years old.
While Rebecca can be quite energetic and lively at times, she is generally a calm and well-behaved child who loves playing with her toys.
A Troubled Relationship With Her Big Sis
OP’s sister is ten years older and also heavier, she weighs around 250 pounds.
OP didn’t have the best relationship growing up with her sister, she usually thought of OP as an annoying kid.
However, this year things had started to improve between them, and her sister had gotten to know Rebecca more.
OP was pleased with how things were progressing and was happy to be reconnecting with her sister.
One week ago, OP’s sister offered to have Rebecca over for a sleepover so they could bond more.
OP agreed, and everything seemed to be going well.
Her Child Is Restrained
However, when she came to pick up her daughter the next day, she was shocked to see that her sister had put her on a leash!
Her sister told her that Rebecca had been on the leash since they left her sister’s house the previous day!
She defended herself, saying that Rebecca was too fast to keep up with and that the leash was the easiest solution.
But OP was understandably angry, and an argument ensued.
She Fat-Shamed Her
In the heat of the moment, she lashed out and told her sister that she was too heavy and lazy to watch her child!
Her sister responded by calling her a name.
OP was furious and told her sister that she would never be alone with Rebecca again and would not see them for a long while before storming off with her daughter.
Later on, OP’s mother called her.
OP’s mother took her sister’s side, which only added to the tension between them.
This has made her feel even more upset and frustrated.
She can’t believe that her mother would side with her sister after she put her daughter on a leash without even asking for permission.
A Rift In the Relationship
It’s unfortunate that this incident has caused a rift in their newly reconnected relationship, but OP has every right to protect her child and ensure her safety.
An Understandable Reaction
It’s not hard to understand why OP had such an emotionally charged reaction.
Imagine entrusting your precious child with someone, only to have them put her on a leash like a dog without your consent.
Many people who read OP’s story agreed that putting a leash on a child without discussing it with the parents is a terrible thing to do.
It was especially concerning that Rebecca had been on the leash for such a long time. Children need to be able to move freely and explore their surroundings, and being restricted like that for hours on end cannot be good for them.
Fat-Shaming Not OK
While she was justified in feeling angry and upset about what had happened, some people felt that her comments about her sister’s weight were unnecessary and hurtful.
They argued that her sister’s weight was not the reason why she had put Rebecca on a leash and that it wasn’t fair to blame her for that.
Others pointed out that many overweight people work in childcare or have children of their own and that they are perfectly capable of looking after them without using a leash.
By implying that her sister’s weight was the problem, OP perpetuates harmful stereotypes and put down all overweight people. It’s unfair and harmful to generalize that all overweight people are lazy or unfit to take care of children.
Despite the disagreement over OP’s comments, most people agreed that what her sister had done was unacceptable. Putting a child on a leash without discussing it with the parents is a breach of trust.
What do you make of this tale? Have you ever had an argument this fiery with a family member? Should she apologize for what she said?
