In a move that has stirred controversy, a former advisor to Donald Trump has filed a civil rights complaint against Kellogg’s, accusing the company of embracing a “woke” culture. Here’s the full story.
The conservative not-for-profit organization, America First Legal (AFL), founded by former Trump advisors Gene Hamilton and Stephen Miller, alleges that Kellogg’s has engaged in discriminatory practices through its marketing campaigns and employee policies.
The reason for the complaint revolves around a series of incidents that the AFL argues demonstrate Kellogg’s shift towards “woke” ideologies.
Association With Influencers From the LGBTQ+ Community
One of the prominent issues raised in the complaint is the company’s association with prominent figures from the LGBTQ+ community.
A Criticized Featuring
A limited-edition Cheez-It box featuring drag queen RuPaul in 2022 drew criticism from AFL for what they perceive as the “politicization” and “sexualization” of Kellogg’s products.
The TikTok Star and the Iconic Mascot
Additionally, the organization took issue with a photograph of Tony the Tiger, Kellogg’s iconic mascot, posing with Trans TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney at the Tony Awards in June.
Kellogg’s Employment Practices in Question
AFL’s complaint also delves into Kellogg’s employment practices.
The organization alleges that the company’s hiring and promotion practices violate federal laws by prioritizing a perceived “balance” based on race and sex, which AFL contends amounts to illegal bias.
AFL’s director of oversight and investigations, Reed D. Rubinstein, asserts that Kellogg’s has shifted from a family-friendly marketing approach to one that embraces “equity,” a term often associated with equal representation but criticized by some as promoting discrimination.
Rubinstein Wrote, “Instead of equality of opportunity, which Kellogg’s defines as ‘giving each person the same things,’ Kellogg’s employment practices are unlawfully based on ‘equity,’ which is a euphemism for illegal discrimination.”
Kellogg’s, in response, stated that its aim is to reflect the diversity of its consumers and foster an inclusive culture.
The company asserts its commitment to compliance with employment laws and maintains policies to prevent workplace discrimination.
Critics argue that AFL’s complaint overlooks the evolving landscape of marketing and consumer preferences.
