After being accused of sexual assault by one of Spain’s female soccer players, the president of Spain’s soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, has decided to resign. Here’s the full story.
Unexpected Kiss
After winning the Women’s World Cup, Luis Rubiales was congratulating the women when he unexpectedly kissed one of the female players, Jenni Hermoso, on the lips.
She Didn’t Like It
After the kiss, Rubiales claimed it was “consensual,” while Hermoso said it was “forced” and “unwanted.”
Hermoso said in an Instagram video taken in the locker room after the victory, “I didn’t like it.”
Hermoso’s Statement
Rubiales was publicly defending himself, so Hermoso issued her own statement. She said, “Simply put, I was not respected.”
Hermoso said she felt “vulnerable” and was a “victim of an impulse-driven, sexist, out of place act without consent.”
90-Day Suspension
FIFA immediately gave Rubiales a 90-day suspension, but he waited a month before announcing his resignation during an interview with Piers Morgan.
Rubiales Resigns
Morgan asked Rubiales what he planned to do, and Rubiales responded, “About my resignation, I’m going to do…I cannot continue my work.”
Too Much Impact on His Friends and Family
During the interview, Rubiales said he had consulted with his father, his daughters, and his friends about resigning.
He said he ultimately decided to leave because of the “scandal’s impact” on other people’s lives.
Excessive Persecution
Rubiales said that his daughters, family, and loved ones have “suffered the effects of an excessive persecution.”
Sexual Assault Charges
Spain’s prosecutor’s office said they will charge Rubiales with “sexual assault and coercion.”
A National Court judge will hear the case, and there will be a formal court investigation.
Rubiales Will Defend Himself
Rubiales denied forcible assault on Hermoso and said he would “take legal action to defend himself against the allegations.”
Interim President Steps In
When FIFA suspended Rubiales “from all football-related activities at national and international level” for 90 days, Pedro Rocha stepped in as interim president.
Public Apology
Rocha issued a public apology, saying the actions of Mr. Rubiales did not “represent the values” of the Spanish Federation nor of the Spanish society “as a whole.”

Rocha said Rubiales’ actions “must be attributed solely and exclusively to him.” and that Rubiales needs to take responsibility for his actions.
