In a twist that’s become all too common in the post-Trump political world, the former president’s allies have launched a barrage of attacks on Emmer, aiming to halt his bid for the House speakership before it gathers momentum.
“Nancy Pelosi in a Suit”
Their message is clear: “Tom Emmer is Nancy Pelosi in a Suit,” a far-right news outlet boldly declared, drawing a comparison to the former Democratic Speaker.
Emmer’s Advantage
Emmer’s ascendancy to the top of the GOP’s Speaker shortlist stems from his unique position.
Following Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s departure from the House’s highest office and the failed bids of Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep.
Steve Scalise to unite the fractious Republican conference, Emmer is the sole candidate with prior experience in winning an internal party contest. McCarthy’s endorsement further cements his advantage.
Slim Margin for Error
With such a slim margin of error in the race for the speakership – a candidate can only afford to lose five GOP votes on the floor – Emmer’s qualifications might seem enough.
However, Trump’s opposition looms as a formidable obstacle.
Trump’s Discontent With Emmer
Trump’s disapproval of Emmer stems from January 6, 2021, when Emmer chose not to vote to overturn the 2020 presidential election results despite previously signing a petition seeking Supreme Court intervention.
Emmer’s Approach to Trump’s Popularity
Emmer further irked the former president by advising midterm candidates to focus on issues other than Trump himself, given the former president’s ongoing unpopularity with the American public.
Trump’s Subtle Influence
Trump has yet to play an overt role in the Speaker contest, having made minimal efforts to support McCarthy and having little influence on Jordan’s bid.

While he has yet to officially comment on Emmer’s candidacy, his allies have been vocal in expressing his opposition.

In response to this opposition, Emmer’s office released a statement.
Casey Nelson, a spokesperson for Emmer’s leadership office, highlighted the collaboration between Emmer and Trump in helping House Republicans reclaim the majority and stated that Emmer would continue this productive partnership if he becomes Speaker.
Emmer the “Swamp Creature”
However, Trump-aligned commentators, including former White House strategist Steve Bannon, are using various media platforms to paint Emmer as a “swamp creature” misaligned with the Make America Great Again movement, despite his alignment with Trump’s policies during the former president’s tenure.
Kevin Hern and Other Speaker Hopefuls
Emmer’s primary competition for the speakership comes from Rep. Kevin Hern, who leads the Republican Study Committee, a group of conservative representatives that covers roughly three-quarters of the 221-member GOP conference.
Emmer’s Competition
Other potential candidates for the Speaker’s role have far less clout within the House. Representatives Byron Donalds (Florida), Jack Bergman (Michigan.), Roger Williams (Texas), Jodey Arrington (Texas), Pete Sessions (Texas), Austin Scott (Georgia), and Mike Johnson (Louisiana) are among the Republicans considering or actively pursuing the speakership.
Trump’s Shadow
As the race for Speaker unfolds, Emmer remains a front-runner with substantial credentials.
Still, the Trump factor casts a shadow of uncertainty over his path to the position, showcasing the ever-present influence of the former president in today’s Republican politics.
