“They surprised us, and they came fast from many spots – both from the air and the ground and the sea,” she added.

The Approach
The assault itself involved a multi-faceted approach.
Hamas launched 3,000 rockets from Gaza while simultaneously sending fighters who glided over the border using hang gliders.
They Breached the Electronic and Cement Wall
Once on the ground, these fighters secured the area, allowing an elite commando unit to breach the fortified electronic and cement wall that separated Gaza from Israeli settlements.
Fighters Swarmed In
The breach was facilitated with explosives, and fighters raced across on motorbikes, aided by bulldozers that widened the gaps.
Even Hamas Leaders and Fighters Were Unaware
A crucial element of the plan was to avoid leaks, which was achieved by keeping many Hamas leaders unaware of the operation’s details.
Even the 1,000 fighters deployed for the assault had no knowledge of the exact purpose of their training exercises.
They Jammed Communications
During the attack, a commando unit targeted the Israeli army’s southern Gaza headquarters, jamming communications and preventing personnel from contacting their commanders or each other.
The Hostage-Taking Operation
One of the most publicized aspects of the attack was the hostage-taking operation.
Fighters abducted party-goers near the Kibbutz of Re’im near Gaza, an incident captured on social media.
Transported to Gaza
These hostages were transported to Gaza, mostly early in the attack.
The assault surprised Israel, exploiting the fact that Israeli troops in the south near Gaza were below full strength due to some being redeployed to the West Bank following a surge of violence.
A Failure of the Intelligence System
Hamas’ ability to deceive Israel represented a significant failure of the intelligence system and military apparatus in the south, according to retired General Yaakov Amidror.
Amidror said that they believed Hamas would act responsibly.
We Made a Mistake
“We stupidly began to believe that it was true. So, we made a mistake. We are not going to make this mistake again, and we will destroy Hamas, slowly but surely,” he said.
